I’ve tried Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Mandriva Linux, wanted to try openSUSE, as I believe it has more to offer.
I wasn’t however expecting the option of, Gnome, and KDE
What do people on here work with? What do you prefer and why? and any major differences. I’ve only worked with Gnome, i’m a little concerned about KDE due to the load of complaints with Linux Mint’s package.
I went with KDE coz I was quite curious, and I like it… The openSUSE platform is quite different to Ubuntu and Mint, but it’s nothing major. I like the KDE setup
There’s no reason not to experiment with both. KDE has a lot of eye candy, and is also a feature of openSUSE. I prefer Gnome for its relative simplicity and stability. Not all distros give you a choice.
I think KDE’s strength lies in its window manager Kwin. It is probably one of the most feature packed WM’s available and has many of the options that Windows 7 aero has, I had no idea KDE 4.4 had the aero snap feature 'til I tried it one day. KDE is always labelled as “eye candy” but it honestly has more functional attributes than eye candy. You can of course get a similar functionality with Gnome and Compiz but Kwin is more stable in my experience.
I work with KDE. And I use some GNOME apps like gnucash. But I don’t give a [DELTA ALPHA MIKE NOVEMBER] what the desktop environment is. What I really need is a decent terminal window like “konsole”. In the old times it was xterm on fvwm. Everything they added since then is just eye candy.
