Different applications?

I just switched to openSuSE 11.1 from Ubuntu 8.04. On Ubuntu, I had a
favorite text editing app, called medit. I searched for it on the
openSuSE install software app, but cannot find it (I am using the GNOME
version of openSuSE, too). I thought applications were dependent on the
DE? So, wouldn’t a GNOME app I was using on Ubuntu work on GNOME
openSuSE? Or do I have that all wrong? Or is it because the GNOME on
Ubuntu was not the newest version?

AFAIK the only gui text editor dependent on your DE is gedit.

So then I should be able to use medit? Why does it not appear in my
searches?

One of the steps when looking for software for openSUSE is use ‘Webpin’
(http://packages.opensuse-community.org/).

I was curious so I filled in ‘medit’ and checked 11.1. Got the
following result: http://tinyurl.com/8vo48t.

Now when *medit *is an editor for mail it seams that we have the right
one! Then majordomo (1.94.5) is the package for you and it is in the OSS
repo. So (when you have your standard repos in place) you can install
majordomo with YaSTT > Software > Software Management.
Hope this helps.

So I have to install majordomo to get medit? There is no way to just
get medit?

Hi, you can run medit on any DE. If you don’t find an medit rpm for
openSUSE you can download the tarball and build medit from source
(./configure and so on). Or you can look for an Ubuntu package and then
use a tool called “alien” to create an rpm from that. The latter should
look somehow like this “alien -r -c theUbuntuPackage.deb” Then you can
(hopefully) install the rpm. Good luck!
edit: I just had a look and I don’t think that majordomo is what you
want.

It seems that people think that it belongs logicaly to majordomo.
Imagine what would happen if every single little tool was made a
seperate package! What is against it? I do not know what comes with
majordomo. You can always check when it is installed in the appropriate
tab in YaST Software Manager. There is much more on your system that you
do not use.

Else go for supertimorplusforts’ method. Looks more work to me, but may
be more fun  . And there is always the chance that you miss some
dependancies.

Hi
If you have a search here now for medit;
Get It

Since it’s a program I have used before and do find it nice with the
terminal window, I grabbed the latest released source and put together
an openSUSE specific spec file based on a fedora core one. I had to add
a couple of patches (one from the cvs bug list) to get it to build.

Enjoy

That is what I call SERVICE!

(Am I right when I think now that the medit I found is a different one
from this one?)

I warned the OP to check this:

I hope he is still tuned in and following the discussion.
