Difference between red and gray envelope icons?

Searched a bit but couldn’t find in this forum

As the title says. I know what an envelope with a lock, a green arrow and open or closed means, but the colors elude me. What do they mean?

Where I know, the grey envelope is for all the threads which are being created and which have not crossed the “high” number of views and the grey diagonal slash & a lock emblem shows that the thread has been locked by a moderator or admin and no user can post in that thread.

So read means hot thread. But when is a thread “hot”?
