Difference between patterns: Base System and DE ? how to install DE without extra applications ?

What is the difference between Base system patterns and Desktop Environment patterns in yast software management ?
Why Lxde, lxqt and enlightment have only one pattern whereas Gnome, kDE, XFCE and Mate Desktop Environments have two patterns ?
How to install a Desktop Environment say for example XFCE along with my KDE install without installing the extra applications that come along with XFCE and get just the working DE?
PS:The last time i installed xfce in my previous install,it came up with lots of applications with it.

I have found that when you install a Desktop (typically a Desktop pattern), you can’t really avoid installing all specified packages. Even if I uncheck packages during the install, the packages are first installed, then removed.

That’s been my procedure… View the pattern’s contents in YAST and remove any undesirable files.

Or,
What is your actual objective?
I’ve found that recent improvements with the Minimal X environment (not installing any Desktop, only running a windows manager) is an excellent way to start with a graphical environment without any graphical apps installed at all (only a windowed console and YAST2). From that, you can add any apps you might want… eg your choice web browser, any other apps.

The Minimal X has recently become my preferred “server” deployment if I might need graphical tools.

I can only comment on xfce.
When I install openSUSE I always start with xfce
then add and take out the additional packages I want and don’t want.

Hi,
I installed tumbleweed and leap today using the x minimal install
and the result is cleaner.

In tumbleweed I added only the base of xfce and selected some package that
I wanted, of course there are some additional dependenciy packages added
to satisfy the additional packages, for example when I added the kernel source
it automatically added the kernel devel packages. But not a major bloat.

In Leap after my minimal x installation I added enlightenment. With enlightenment
you were right in your post, there is only one option but to choose the pattern for enlightenment,
but those were just a few that wont bloat the os.
