Did Gnome integration change between SLED 11.1 and 11.2?

Hey folks, this might seem like an unusual question since things always change when you have a major update, but the apps that ran and installed just fine under 11.1 don’t (seem to) under 11.2. I was running Gnome under 11.1, and have used the same desktop as I moved to 11.2.

For example, I was able to install and run the Novell Support Advisor 1.1 under SLED 11.1 just fine. I would need to authenticate as root before the app would run, but it would run just fine.

After I upgraded from SLED 11.1 to 11.2, things just don’t seem to be as stable. NSA (and other apps) seem to install, but their icons don’t appear in the applications folder, and when I login su and then attempt to run, the terminal window usually hangs.

I can’t get a CIFS client to install (I see it in the list of installed apps, but it’s not present under YAST).

Banshee was a beautiful app under 11.1, but I feel like I spend more time working around it’s glitches in 11.2 rather than setting it to play and enjoying it’s usefulness.

The Novell Client (yes, I know, it’s not officially supported under 11.2) has caused me enough heartache that I VNC an XP box just to get to files.

So anyway, enough whining, what can/should I do to work through these issues? Should I just give up and go back to 11.1? Is it better to burn and re-build rather than upgrade per the OpenSUSE docs? Is there some “magic” log files folder (other than availble via YAST) to see where error messages are occurring so I can troubleshoot the issues better?

Thanks for any suggestions.
Bill

You know that SLED 11 (not 11.1) Is different to openSUSE 11.1 and 11.2??

Whoops, yeah, sorry, OpenSUSE. With Novell as our network, I get confused occasionally when describing the environment. Anyway, from the System Monitor, SUSE Linux 11.2, Kernel Linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop, Gnome 2.28.2.

11.2 Gnome is rock solid for me. I give it 10/10

There are way too many repos there for my liking. In Gnome I have 4 repos only:
Oss,
Non-Oss
Update
Packman

And I’m still confused about your stability issues because you refer to Novell apps. Which are not used in 11.2

Hi Carl
NSA (is a client) can be used to look at other systems, it runs using
Adobe Air…

I guess it could be used on openSUSE as well to a certain degree as they
all have the ability to run the supportconfig tools, which if an
openSUSE user had a boxed version and logged a case it would be used.

I just tried it against 11.3 M5 and it does work

OK, so then am I making a the system more complicated by the plethora of repos? I admit I’m still a newbie and added the other repos not knowing what apps I wanted to install and run above the base OS and it’s pre-installed apps.

Malcolm, yeah, it’s a great tool for those of us preparing to migrate from Netware to OES. I just wish I could get it running again on my system now that I upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.2.

Hi
Are you running the latest version?

Not yet. I saw that 2.0 was just released, but I thought I should try and troubleshoot (what I’m thinking are) general system issues before deploying the new release. I mean, if I can’t get 1.1 to work, how much more success should I expect from trying the next version?

Hi
I think 2.1 will support netware, I’ve played with 2.0 but never used
1.1, is 1.1 run Adobe Air?

I think you should add your voice over in the novell forum and/or ask
specifics there maybe it will help get things pushed through

Yeah, that’s a good suggestion and probably my next step.

Looking at the information on NSA 2.0, it will target Linux Enterprise Server, GroupWise, and Zenworks (both running on linux I’m assuming).

My guess is (like everything) that they’re targeting the evironments where they are continuing to create patches.
