Dictafon

Please help! I’m just one step from uninstalling windows forever and start using open suse 11, except for one silly part of hardware - dictafon sony ICD-P330F. I’m journalist and really need dictafon in my job. Is there any driver or program for Linux for dictafons?

i’m not familiar with that at all…and, i don’t know what kind of
“driver” you have with windows…i mean, is it like a GUI interface
where you can rewind, play, pause or what…or, do you also have text
to speech IN the computer, and/or in the sony…

OR if you just need to access the in-memory audio files, that should
be a piece of cake…does the Sony have a USB attachment, if so, can’t
you just plug it in and use any of several audio players…

failing all else maybe you could install the regular windows software
with WINE and continue using it…

OR, run a licensed copy of Windows[tm] in a VM, and run the Sony
software there–AND have free and easy access to it from Linux and
vice versa…(like copy speech->text files from the VM to any word
processor in Linux…etc…)

otherwise: may i introduce you to one of the ways that M$ has LOCKED
customers into buying their software until hell freezes over…

if that is the case you can write a very nice letter to Sony and ask
when they will provide software compatible with non-M$ computers…

I have no experience with dictation software, but a search in Google gives
some results:

Have not tested neither of them :-?

Another tool that may fit your needs could be Audacity.

And well, you can always use a virtual machine or Wine to run that specific
application

Thanks a lot natural_pilot and Camaleón!

Yes, there is a problem with “GUI interface
where you can rewind, play, pause or what…”. This piece of hardware come with it’s own software - Digital voice editor - that is (of course) targeted to the windows environment. It doesn’t work with WINE but I’m going to try VM. Problem is also with this native audio format “dvf” of the recorded messages that can’t be read by audio players, so I have to find a way to emulate this software in Linux.

Thanks for reminding me to write a letter to Sony!!

Again, thank you a lot, I’m really glad you answered.
