Dial up connection

Good morning,

I have recently installed 11.0 and I have a dial up connection :frowning: Below are the results of lspci and the Kinternet log. Kinternet is setup and appears to recognize my modem, but will not connect.

Can someone offer any suggestion as to how I can get my modem to work?

Did you turn on smpppd in Yast / System / Services? This is essential.

Did the modem work in another version of linux, so that you know it’s linux-compatible?

I would suggest looking into using an external serial modem, since according to your info it’s a winmodem.

You might get it to work, but you’ll probably save yourself a lot agony just getting an inexpensive generic external serial port model. If you don’t have a serial port, you can use a USB to Serial adapter. These are also very cheap and are plug and play in Suse.

Serial modems are generally also plug and play. I have a bunch of them lying around and you can get a used one dirt cheap or send away for one for less that $20 US.

The above line from your lspci command may be a problem as foresthill said. The “Winmodems” require proprietary drivers that don’t exist in Linux, so your modem might not work.

You can use an external USB modem like the USRobotics USR5637 USB Faxmodem

A friend of mine uses one of these with his laptop and it works great with his OpenSUSE install.

Thanks for the responses. I did some research and wanted to know if anyone has had any luck using linmodems.org to get their winmodem to work? If not, then it looks like I will need to invest in a new modem.

I recall looking over that Linmodem site, but I probably spent combined weeks trying to get winmodems to work in Linux, and can say with confidence that it’s simply not worth anyone’s time.

Especially when you can just plop down 20 bucks for an external modem that will work as soon as you plug it in.

One caution though. Not all USB modems are Linux-compatible, so make sure anything you buy has been tested to be compatible. Serial modems generally are compatible though, so if you have a choice, go with a serial based one.

All I remember about the “linmodem” site was that many people have had no luck getting Winmodems to work in Linux. You best bet is a new USB or Serial based modem. I’ve seen these referred to as “controller based” also.

The USR website lists the modem I posted a link to as being Linux compatible, btw.

they have the sources for the Lucent Modems, with any luck - they will work with yours. When I was using LT modems, the martian drivers worked wonders… Lt is one of the FEW modems that do work in Linux.
