Diagonal black and white rectangles after installed openSuse 12.2.

I have just installed openSuse 12.2 in my machine and I didn’t even installed updates I just rebooted and upon login kdm fill the entire screen with black and whites rectanges diagonally, I can’t switch to other TTY’s, as I couldn’t switch to any TTY I reinstalled and configured Xorg accordingly to my hardware and rebooted, but it still the same.

They told me that openSuse is very stable, but I am starting to thing otherwise.

I have no interest in what they have to say. Stable is a very non-specific word to describe any software. I happen to find openSUSE very reliable.

Anyway, at the very least you should be able to boot into failsafe mode, which is an option below the default on the grub screen. This will ignore your (if any) xorg configuration and boot using the fbdev driver. That way you can use the system to correct the issue or gather more information. More information about your hardware would help please.

I had the same problem, but I managed to solve it. here’s the thread: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/install-boot-login/478735-chessboard-instead-desktop.html
I hope it’s of use for you

Just search for another, (solved) thread titled “chessboard instead of desktop”.

You are very easily put off :stuck_out_tongue:

Actually I not that easy to put off, It was very stressed because openSuse is supossed to be the most stable and reliable distro and right after install it was presenting that issue and I really needed a very quick fix because I had a deadline with a programming contest, by the way the issue is gone thanks for helping. My installation is usable but, it is kinda slow, I know that KDE work better with free and open source video drivers because of the kernel modeseting and whatnot, I searched in google for any topics relating opensuse and nouveau but I couldn’t find any relevant, I also searched in the openSuse wiki but I couldn’t find nothing on nauveau. Can someone please tell me what is the status of the nouveau video driver in openSuse.

So why did you chose this point in time to update in the first place? You had working environment before that would allow you to finish your work, did not you?

Can someone please tell me what is the status of the nouveau video driver in openSuse

The bug is found and hopefully it will be in next kernel update.
