DHCP config ?

Hi,

Just one question; Do I config DHCP from a textfile
on opensuse 11.0 ?
Or like the sles 10 version with graphical interface?

Now I just don’t see any icon for dhcp in Yast

Install yast2-dhcp-server

Uwe

…or edit /etc/dhcpd.conf manually.
Just as you prefer.

I’ve tried to intall from yast and it even shows as installed component
but the icon doesn’t show.

I think I have to conf by textfile

If you need any help, feel free to ask.
I did the setup of a dhcp-server approx. 2 month ago.

how bout monitoring? is there a window on whos aquiring the address like in windows?

thanks

All the “speaking” which is done can be seen in /var/log/messages.

would you explain more cleary

Sure.
When you look at the file /var/log/messages all the entries are in the format:
<timestamp> <servername> <service>: <message>

Example for dhcp:

Sep 2 08:05:57 myserver dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from <some mac-address> via eth0

If a client connects to dhcp you should see

  1. DHCPDISCOVER
  2. DHCPOFFER
  3. DHCPREQUEST
  4. DHCPACK
messages which can be identified with the mac address of the connecting client. If these 4 messages are there and are more or less in a row then the client has connected successfully and got an IP-Addy from the dhcp-server.

Thanks to both of you.
I finally got the graphical console up
I had installed only the client
Noted my mistake when using the console version of YAST
-it’s by the way easier and quicker to use

Thanks

can i ask on how to set up the graphical dhcp on suse…i really need this…
thanks

thanks…

I did this by logging in as root on a console ans using the console YAST
looked under software and DHCP server and choose install.
I’m sure you could install from graphical YAST also.
Just look in software and choose the right product.
Can post back when I’m at work tomorrow and give you exact location.
