Device notifier is not showing the external hard disk device.

Hi Everbody,

I have an external hard disk device which I usually attached to my Laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T420s) with USB. It worked quite well for the last 6 connections, but now the “Device Notifier” is not recognizing the connection anymore. In /var/log/message I have

In /var/log/warn I have

kernel: 6046.103333] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page present
kernel: 6046.103338] sd 11:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through

which is repeating.

Anyone an idea, why the “Device notifier” is silent?

An access which is granted is the KDE Dolphin tool, where an “Entry” is still given which I can use.

best regards

If you open up a terminal session and run the following command, what do you get?

hwinfo --disk --short

Do you mount this drive from your fstab file? You can post a copy with the terminal command:

cat /etc/fstab

Tell us anything else you can about this hard drive.

Thank You,

Hi jdmcdaniel3,

the external hard disc is a Maxtor 500GB, the model name is Maxtor 9nz2a4-500. I usually do not mount the disc by hand. Always rely on the auto-mounter. The commands give the following information

/usr/sbin/hwinfo --disk --short
disk:
/dev/sda INTEL SSDSA2BW16
/dev/sdb Maxtor Basics Desktop

cat /etc/fstab
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-INTEL_SSDSA2BW160G3L_CVPR125300D3160DGN-part1 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-INTEL_SSDSA2BW160G3L_CVPR125300D3160DGN-part4 swap swap defaults 0 0
UUID=06feecbd-3134-4ac6-b999-72f0b215161e /home btrfs defaults 1 2
UUID=f146850e-2ce9-4a14-b87c-59379854890c /usr btrfs defaults 1 2
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0
debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0

So the hardware info seems to detect the disc, but I cannot find in the mount table. And again, the “Device Notifier” is not recognizing anything, but an entry is nicely placed in “Dolphin”. When I click on the entry for the external HDD in Dolphin, the directory /media/xxxxx is created to access it.

Anymore ideas?

regards

I think I might run this command and see what it says. Should have included this morning and sorry for not thinking of it:

sudo /sbin/fdisk -l

The entry from the first test: /dev/sdb Maxtor Basics Desktop, is this the same Maxtor drive you seek? It finds the hard drive, but what about the partition? The fdisk command can show if any partition is found. While not good to hear from anyone, but I had one of these drives and after several years, it did finally fail. It was USB 2.0, I keep it own all of the time and finally one day it was no longer there, but I can’t recall if I had the same experience as you exactly. Also, you can run the YaST Partitioner and see if any partition is shown as being present (YaST / System / Partitioner).

Thank You,
