I have a weird issue on my Lenovo Y50-70 running openSUSE 42.3. That is, when device notifier for system tray is enabled, it constantly crashes (i.e. panel freezes, clock is not updating, start/application menu does not open, etc.) I can switch between active windows with Alt+Tab. I can also start new application from krunner (Alt+F2 still works). If i do
killall plasmashell && kstart plasmashell
, it works fine for a couple of minutes and freezes again. If i disable device notifier - problem goes away.
I was running openSUSE 42.3 (now running TW) on Dell XPS 15 (9550) and never had this issue. This makes me thing there is something specific about Lenovo Y50-70. Anyone got ideas?

Try creating a new user, login as that user and see if the problem exists for that user. If so, it’s a system issue needing further investigation, if not the culprit is in your homedir.

Hi, It’s a good Idea, but no. Even with a new user account, as soon as USB thumb drive is plugged in (i.e. device notifier engaged), the plasmashell freezes.

Open a terminal window, and do
dmesg -w
, then plug in a USB stick and look at the messages in the terminal window.
OK, here’s the output from
dmseg -w

I wasn’t clear enough, I meant the output at the moment plasmashell freezes.
Sure, here is the output with Device Notifier enabled

CIFS related messages are probably because I have couple of network mounts at work, but I’m at home at the moment.
This is interesting. I have disabled SMB shares (I used to mount them through fstab) and enabled device notifier. Plasmashell hasn’t frozen yet.
I remember that having SMB shares on devices list (left side) in Dolphin would severely slow down save dialogue windows from applications like Firefox and LibreOffice. Is there some long going SMB support issue?
