I have just started using Opensuse 11.1, after some time using 10.2. Is
it possible to have a different background screen for each desktop? It
was straightforward in 10.2, but when I change it in a desktop in 11.1
(in “System Settings” then “Desktop”) it changes all of them! Is there
any default option I can change in order to allow that?

Not that I’ve been able to find. I miss that, too. Badly. My theory is,
why have multiple desktops if you’re not going to make them completely
independent and different?
Apparently the KDE developers are absolutely determined to make their
desktop more Gnome-like.
Dual monitor backgrounds are individually configurable though… which is
annoying as you end up cutting wallpapers meant for dual monitor setup
in 2.
Hope they change it around so we can both have what we want

Yeah, but you could go into Gimp with your Really Wide Wallpaper, cut
it into two pieces and assign each half to each screen. I’m just stuck.
I wonder if the reason they dropped the ability to use different
wallpapers was because of the emphasis on the new effects? When you’re
shrinking and rotating desktops, there’s a common background behind
them.
(Speaking from memory; I went back to 10.3, and don’t use those
effects.)

The long answer is related to the way plasma changed the desktop
metaphor that KDE had previously used. It’s about workspaces,
containments, activities and such. That is, frankly, the extent of my
understanding on the subject, so I guess it’s not really much of a long
answer after all.
The short answer, though, is that it was not an intent to remove
different wallpaper/desktop assignments. It’s just a feature that had to
be removed because of the way plasma works, but there is every intention
to bring it in. I would be surprised if it wasn’t ready for KDE 4.3.
In fact, I think there’s an unsupported way to do it with an option
line to plasmarc that allows each workspace to have it’s own desktop
containment, remember reading about it somewhere, but I haven’t tried it
myself.
Sure, you can go back to KDE 3.5 (which I’ve done on my 11.1 laptop at
work). But some of us were wondering if that functionality would be
returned to the KDE 4.x branch. else_where says, “yes;” I hope so.
