Desktop will not fully load after update

Successfully installed 42.3 with KDE on a relatively low-spec desktop PC.

First round of updates were related to Zypper. Installed OK and restarted.

Second round of updates counted over 300 items. Installed OK and restarted.

Can now only reach the KDE login screen. Entering login results in reaching a visible default OpenSuse desktop and mouse pointer, but no menu.

Log files don’t show any obvious errors, but I don’t know what to look for.

Since you just started, try deleting the ~/.config folder, or create a new user (you can use ncurses yast for this).

As an aside, I always install midnight commander (mc), a great file manager/editor that runs on a terminal for when you can’t start X or access the desktop. It helps if you’re not yet familiar with linux file structures and configurations.

Adding a video card a little more powerful than the on-board chip seems to have solved the problem. (Both Nvidia).

Wow, an onboard nvidia GPU! It has to be at least 10 years old since I saw one, if not more. It’s not surprising it wouldn’t work, either it is not supported anymore or the wrong nvidia blob version was installed. Out of curiosity, what was the gfx spec? Run, as root in a terminal:

hwinfo --gfxcard | grep Device
