Desktop Theme help

So I want OpenSUSE to look a little better so I was going through the themes and I found one I really like(Peruvian Torch) And I installed it but i cant figure out how to start it up or initiate the theme.

So here is what I do.

Start->desktop theme->Get new theme->installed->(I can now see that I have installed it)

when I go into the themes that I already have than it dosent show that I have it.

I am running OpenSUSE 13.2 on a 32 bit system I think.

You are talking about “the desktop”, but on openSUSE you can use many desktops. It might be worthwhile to tell which one you are using.

You need to check to see what type of desktop that theme is designed for. I just installed OpenSUSE 13.2 and KDE was the default desktop, so unless you selected Gnome or installed a different desktop during the installation process, you probably have KDE.

The theme you installed is probably for a different type of desktop than what you have currently installed. I think that’s what hcw was trying to get at.

I do have KDE, so i need to select a KDE theme to go with it?

Obviously.

But if you use the “Get New Theme” function in KDE’s settings, you only get offered KDE themes anyway.
If a theme is marked as “installed” and still doesn’t show up in the list, it might not be compatible with your KDE version and only work with older ones.
Otherwise you should be able to select it immediately afterwards.

But in this particular case (Peruvian Torch) the package just doesn’t install any desktop theme when you click on “Install”. Please click on “Details” in the “Download Theme” dialog instead to get instructions how to install it, or see here: https://opendesktop.org/content/show.php?content=157140
You should be able to select it if you download and extract it to the correct folder manually, I just tried and it works.

I personally know of what the OP means. Here is what I did.

  1. Dl’d Peruvian torch from KDE-look
2.Moved the tarball to a new folder I created(new Folder)
3.Extracted it into new folder using the extract there in the Dolphin context menu
4.Opened the the folder Peruvian Torch
5.There’s another Peruvian Torch folder inside that
  2. C & P that folder into ~/.kde4/share/apps/desktoptheme

After that if all has gone well it’ll show up in Desktop Themes & you’ll have it!
Why it’s this way IDK but that’s how it is.
Lastly PT is a decent looking theme I thought it worth the effort after I was done you might too.

Thank you, Now that I have that done, I noticed that my background keeps changing on me, I will change it and set it and it will be fine. Then I take my hard drive to work and then it will be back to default, Is this the way that it is or am I doing something wrong?

No that is not normal.

But what exactly do you mean with “Then I take my hard drive to work and then it will be back to default”?
You use the same hard drive with two different computers?
Are you logging in as the same user?

I love what I do and I have been writing programs for the school Im working for, and I need fast testing so I cant remote control my work computer because its too slow for what Im trying to do.

therefore I take my hard drive home to work on that project without having to carry a flash drive or anything and worry about transferring it. I like a dark environment I work best with darker colors, So I had the background with a planet and space that was a really dark black and green.

So I set the dark background, I did it by: Right click on desktop->Desktop Settings->And then change the background picture. And its alright untill I take the hard drive either to work or home, then it changes back to that OpenSUSE green background.

Your setting are stored in your home so do you have different home partitions or use different users??

I use the same user Just different computers

Well where is home set then.

It is really truly unclear exactly what you are doing and how you have it setup. But the desktop settings are stored in the /home/username/ directory. It is clear to me that these locations are not the same on these two machines. Thus the setup has to be odd. Since the government has taken all the crystal balls it is hard to know how you have things setup

Even so, when you put it back into the computer shouldnt it set my saved background?

Like it I take out my HD and then put it back in the same computer then it sets back to default as well.

Well I don’t know since I don’t know how it is setup. maybe give some more info

fdisk -l might show us something also /etc/fstab could give a clue

Hmmm is this “drive” a Live installer?

I dont know what you ean by live installer

Which installer version are you using the full DVD or one of the LIVE DVD’s??

It is really unclear. Unless the hardware is exactly the same I would expect that normal install image would not work because of the way the initrd is set to remember the hardware so as to boot fast.

But if you are using a LIVE DVD then the image is set up to test the hardware on each boot thus able to boot on a wider variety of computers. So it is a bit of a mystery exactly what you’re doing. With out knowing the exact set up it is difficult to know how to help solve your problem

I am not sure how to check that

How did you install it to the portable dive?? What kind of drive is it? Spinning rust or USB stick or SSD???

When you boot it does it have an install option?

Show use as root fdisk -l

Also show

cat /etc/fstab

In any case your personal setting are always in your personal home so it sounds like you have two different personal homes I can’t figure how you managed that??

Hi,

I have used Peruvian Torch, there is a QtCurve file in the folder called “Peruvian_Torch.qtcurve”. I would suggest that you install QtCurve then “Configure Desktop -> Application Appearance -> Style” Select QtCurve for the widget.
Once that’s done, click on “Configure” and click on “Import” navigate to the folder where you have uncompressed Peruvian Torch and select the file mentioned earlier" Peruvian_Torch.Qtcurve.
In Application Appearance you can select the PeruvianTorch.colors
