How do I unlock a desktop icon? I don’t like where some are locked at and I want to move them to another place on the desktop. I noticed, for instance, the trash and home icons are not locked in place and I can move them anywhere I want.
I am using openSUSE 11.1 GNOME i686 (in a VMware machine). The reason for that is because I can’t seem to get ANY linux distro to recognize my Linksys RangePlus USB network adapter! That’s why I am using the VMware Player in Wind[bl]ows. I can’t seem to find a ndiswrapper driver that recognizes it. I’ve tried using the install CD’s driver but it doesn’t seem to work? :\
Hi
That’s because they are owned by the root user, you can either disable
them via the application gconf-editor and browse to
apps->nautilus-desktop there is a directory
entry /usr/share/dist/desktop-files and uncheck the box (or remove
the directory entry) and they will be gone. In the past most people
have just removed the files from the directory in question.

I tried using the terminal and su-ed to root (because they are owned by root and won’t allow me to delete them) and called up Nautilus and tried to delete them but neither right-clicking on them (‘delete’ showed inactive) nor dragging them to the trashcan worked!? So, I tried exiting su and called up gconf-editor and deselected the icons, closed the editor and tried to move them. They still won’t allow me to move them!
Everytime I try to move it I get a dialogue box pop up saying:
A file named
“GnomeOnlineHelp.desktop” already
exists. Do you want to replace it?
The file already exists in “/home/james/
Desktop”. Replacing it will overwrite its contents.
[Cancel] [Skip] [Replace]
I even logged out and logged back in as root and unticked the settings in gconf-editor for the desktop icons…still the same results!? :\ (I didn’t try deleting them while logged in as root … I’ll try that and come back to let y’all know what happens)

heh! except: Why oh Why would a default install of 11.1 (or any
system) put root owned files on a user desktop?
oh wait, maybe that was one of the many problems which continue to be
delivered to the masses by the devs who work so hard they don’t have
time to learn here about all the confusion they cause (and the reason
i’m still on dependable 10.3 and hoping for some movement back to
sensible/dependable/etc in 11.3)
Hi
It’s a feature You could drop say a custom application (and the icon
in the corresponding directory under /usr/share/dist/ then you users
couldn’t delete it, the directory and feature is still there, just not
populated.
I think a search on the fora was that most people
just cd’d to the directory and removed them, I know I did…
