Several times in the last few days the desktop has frozen. I don’t know if it’s KDE issue or another conflict. All programs seem to continue running smoothly, but none of the menus on windows will work, or anything in the task manager, or desktop itself. I’ve tried killing the task manager but it doesn’t affect the issue. If I knew what process was causing this, I might be able to restart it. Anyone familiar with this issue or have any suggestions to isolate the process if this recurs?

Try creating a new user and see if it is the same there
Thanks for your reply!
As far as the link I posted above, I got an external SATA USB enclosure that’s been freezing up, on Windows too, but I haven’t noticed it interfering with system operation. Unfortunately it didn’t occur to me to check whether it was frozen every time the KDE desktop hangs. Last night I noticed the KDE freeze happened shortly after the USB drive froze, but I don’t know if they are related or not.

So if the USB device is not connected? What happens?
Perhaps I should have been clearer. I do not keep the usb drive on most of the time. I don’t know if it was connected or not every time the desktop freeze happened. It didn’t occur to me until I posted it here that the two issues could be related. I don’t think the system froze every time the drive froze. I didn’t notice any particular pattern to the system freeze, partly because the applications continue running so I didn’t notice right away when the menu bars stopped working.
Basically, I really can’t say right now if this issue was any different with or without the drive. I will see if I can get the drive to freeze again and notice a conjunction.
Also, I overlooked your comment about trying with a new user, so I can give that a shot. Thanks for helping me out with this. I’d like to figure it out.
The xsession message that caught my eye, was that, “Communication problem with dolphin/Did not receive a reply”. That sounds like a hang.
Can you bring up a monitor and see if there is any high cpu usage? Monitor like top or htop in konsole. Or, if responsive, can you hit alt-f2 to start krunner and hit the System Activity. Click the cpu% column.
What are you doing on the desktop when it hangs?
Might search at kde for hangs, etc : https://bugs.kde.org/
Egads! This occurs when write is attempted to the external USB. The drive busy light goes from green to flashing rapidly and the drive doesn’t respond anymore. This is the same thing that happened in Windows, although I didn’t notice it hanging the system.
I don’t know whether it’s the drive in the enclosure, the enclosure itself, which is a new Coolmax, a software problem or hardware…

One thing about Linux is it will attempt IO until it works or the Universe ends which ever comes first. I’d suggest not using the broken device with the system until it is fixed.
is there a reason why my op.su. box takes 30min. to write a 1gig file on a usb flash drive, while my win-no’s box writes the same file on the same flash drive in 3min.??
…i like to imagine that the op.su. box goes through 10 times as many security and insurance processes before, during, and after it writes the file…

reason? yep, probably…you got something munged and or set up wrongly…
what do you find in your logs…i suspect one or more has tons of errors…
how about [NOTE: to get back to the comfy GUI press Ctrl+Alt+F7] while
the transfer is in progress, press Ctrl+Alt+F10 to look at the kernel
messages…see any errors there? use your camera to take a photo,
post it to a free image posting site (like: photobucket, pastebin or
google) and shoot us the link…

you have a active imagination…
speaking of that, why invent an abbreviation for openSUSE when the one
you SHOULD have used should have been one of these: 11.0, 11.1, 11.2
then we would know what you were using…now all we know is “op.su”
which is absolutely useless info, and incorrect at best since there is
nothing here named op.su, maybe oS or op.SU or just nothing but some
numbers…i mean if you say “i like to imagine the 11.2 box goes …”
no one here will wonder if you are using Red Hat or openSUSE 11.1 or
openSUSE 11.0 or SLED or SuSE 9.3 or . . .
> ooooo the wonderful mystical magical mysteries of linux!!
nice attitude…but, not one that makes most here want to help you.
hint1: since your ‘problem’ is not “desktop freezing” why didn’t you
post to your new thread with a subject kinda like “extremely slow
write to USB flash drive”
hint2: give the folks who want to help you all the info they will
almost always need (OS version, 32/64, DE, etc)
hint3: read http://is.gd/2BfI3

(in my best joker voice)
why so serious?
why so serious, pal?
why so serious, lad?
i like to use “op.su.” because i’m a hip mofo.
if you actually paid attention to what was written, i never said i had a “‘problem’”. i just asked a simple question. in fact, no where in the post did i ask for help. if i was actually asking for help on a possible problem, i would have used the actual words “help” and “problem”.
likewise, if i was actually seeking help with the subject of my question, i actually would have stated my specs, and produced the necessary logs. i am not new to op.su., nor am i new to the proper protocol of the op.su. community forum.
regarding “http://is.gd/2BfI3”, you’re automatically assuming that i have no skills. from one question you assume that all i know how to do is type and click the mouse button. for all you know, i could be typing this message on a self-built system, running my own form of linux, finely tuned to my own elite specifications, comparable to my own elite cr.h.y.ack.ing skills. for all you know, i could be using op.su. simply to test the superiority of my own undistributed linux distro. in fact, you have no clue whether i’m typing this in cli or gui, or mti…(for the uninitiated, mti is “mind transfer interface”; if you’ve never heard of this, you must not be an initiate, and must therefore realize that my technology just might be superior to yours)
as i was reading sp3wn’s postings, the mentioning of “usb” linked to the network of information around the node “usb” within my organic operating system, which, i must add, is elite and superior itself. if i actually did have an actual ‘problem’ with my usb, i actually would have started a new thread, probably using the words “help”, “problem”, and “usb” somewhere in the title line.
i feel honored that you took that time to m@$+urb@+3 your little ego to one of the most innocuous questions i have ever asked. that you were able to find stimulation and significance in a completely unstimulating and insignificant question is admirable.
and because i am such a hip mofo, i felt it would’ve been rude of me not to devote as much time to your ignorance as you did to what you assumed was my ignorance.
now, seriously.
could you help me with this problem that i’ve been trying to figure out for years:
why did the chicken cross the road??
rotfl!
lighten up…

I can’t say I have ever experienced this. I regularly transfer a similar volume to a USB device for my Son. The only thing I would say is, that I have to get him to format it from time to time, because he is in the habit of just pulling it from his PC (Not safely removing).
I don’t know, but there may be a performance issue in that we have a Linux system working with a M$ file format (Luckily we are not trying to write to a Linux file system from Winders).
Was this remark: problem that i’ve been trying to figure out for years
Strictly applied to your Chicken comment or was it implying your USB issue is also long term?
Is your system correctly seeing your USB as USB2.
Have you tried other USB ports, perhaps one of those at the back directly on the Mobo?

@palladium…you’re so sensitive. “lighten up”
@caf…thanks for the insight. no, the “problem” i was really thinking of was about the road.
…but i already ran the cli through the mti, and i’ve worked it all out.
