Desktop flickering

Hi i’m new (and italian, so i beg your pardon if i make mistakes)

I experienced problem with my video, an ATI Radeon HD card on a 64bit cpu. The video flicker if i use kwin effects.
I followed some treads in order to change and install a different driver but it didn’t work…

Those are my sys info… if you need more i’ll give you. Thanks for the help rotfl!

I followed some treads in order to change and install a different driver but it didn’t work…

  1. I guess you mean you tried installing the proprietary ATI driver. If you decide to pursue that option further, have a read of this guide using a script to do the work for you.

http://forums.opensuse.org/content/46-ati-driver-atiupgrade.html

  1. It has been discovered that the power management service ‘upower’ can be one cause of this behaviour, but AFAIU it was fixed at version 0.9.9, and 12.1 uses a later version by default. At least one user experienced this problem with openSUSE 12.1, and has found upgrading to the 12.2 RC release fixed this issue. I’ll share the thread here:

http://forums.opensuse.org/forums/english/get-technical-help-here/hardware/477488-radeon-driver-screen-flickers.html

BTW, it is possible to update to a later version of upower if desired (and stay with 12.1):

software.opensuse.org:

Click on ‘Show other versions’ and install the appropriate package for your system. No promises on whether it will help your display issue, but worth a shot I guess.

i tried to use atiupgrade but it gives this kind of error:<br><br><br><div>:~ # atiupgrade</div><div> (1) - Analyzing system…</div><div> * Found ATI graphics card: HD 4650</div><div> (2) - Getting latest (or specified) Catalyst version: 12.8</div><div> (3) - Installing required packages…</div><div> * Kernel source matches installed kernel (3.1.10-1.16)</div><div> * kernel-source is already installed</div><div> * kernel-desktop-devel is already installed</div><div> * kernel-syms is already installed</div><div> * gcc is already installed</div><div> * make is already installed</div><div> (4) - /usr/share/atiupgrade directory exists…</div><div> (5) - Downloading the ATI installer amd-driver-installer-12-8-x86.x86_64.run …</div><div> * Connecting… Please wait…</div><div>asking libproxy about url ‘http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/amd-driver-installer-12-8-x86.x86_64.run’</div><div>libproxy suggest to use ‘direct://’</div><div>–2012-08-30 12:55:32-- http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/amd-driver-installer-12-8-x86.x86_64.run</div><div>Resolving www2.ati.com (www2.ati.com)… 32.58.164.146</div><div>Connecting to www2.ati.com (www2.ati.com)|32.58.164.146|:80… connected.</div><div>HTTP request sent, awaiting response… 404 Not Found</div><div>2012-08-30 12:55:33 ERROR 404: Not Found.</div><div><br></div><div> * ATI installer amd-driver-installer-12-8-x86.x86_64.run not found.
