I’m running OpenSUSE Leap 16 with GNOME 48 and haven’t run into any issues so far. I’m just wondering about Leap 16.1, will it get newer desktop environment updates?
You can download a 16.1 installer and test for yourself.
I currently have two 16.1 installs, each in a VBox VM.
I use KDE Plasma, so can’t comment on GNOME.

Currently at 48.4 as you can check here but we are not even beta and package version freeze is currently Jul 2nd according to https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Roadmap
But I suspect that to preserve X11 compatibility Leap 16.1 is unlikely to go beyond 49…
