Desktop environment hangs after update

I was upgrading from the snapshot 20241117 to the latest snapshot but after updating I can only enter SDDM and it refuses to log into any wm or de, do I have to wait for another snapshot or is there any solutions to this problem?

More information is needed in order for us to make suggestions. If you can reach a vtty with Ctrl-Alt-F4 you may use susepaste to upload Xorg.0.log if it can be found in /var/log/ or **~/.local/share/xorg/. You may run command inxi -GSaz to show its output here, which will show your GPU(s) and other troubleshooting data. If these either of these two commands return not found, you may install with sudo zypper commandname. To facilitate navigation and operations on vtty you may use mc command as substitute for Dolphin. Command redirection of output to a file can ease collecting this data for inclusion here via copy and paste, much preferred to attached pictures of your screen:

somecommand > somefile.txt

If Xorg.0.log cannot be found, try sudo journalctl -b | susepaste and provide resulting URL here.

@omarumaru39 From an old snapshot release, perhaps the plymouth bug?

i can enter plymouth and sddm but not the desktop environment

i mainly use wayland for my desktop

Switch to X11. Today’s mesa update broke wayland.

The suggestion about the “plymouth bug” probably relates to other folks having “boot into desktop environment” problems because of Plymouth and related.

One suggestion is to disable Plymouth and the “splash screen” options for the “kernel” entry in the Grub menu.

sudo journalctl -p3 -b input/output may be helpful.

switched to x11 kde, it worked but wifi and shutdown now require sudo in konsole

I have the same issue. Just posted on the factory mailing list. After upgrading to snapshot 20241206, login ends to a black screen with Wayland. X11 works but had also the reboot, shutdown issue and reverted to a previous pre-upgrade snapshot.

I noticed this thread and locked Mesa and libvulkan in advance of dup. Result: logging in to plasma wayland returned to sddm, with many errors on journal. Logged in successfully to Xorg, with some visual glitches (no blur).

Removed locks and did a new dup. Plasma Wayland works.

Premature worrying is the root of all evil.

It is an upstream bug affecting some AMD GPUs (older ones like mine). There is a fix already, and the opensuse Mesa maintainer will merge it as soon as possible. For the time being anyone affected should stick to 20241205 snapshot.
