Desktop effects too slow and have been suspended

Hi

Not sure if this is the right sub-forum…

Recently I get the msg “Desktop effects too slow and have been suspended”

Thanks

Otto

You didn’t say which of the 2 machines in your sig this happened to
or
What you were doing at the time

Sorry. the AMD box with 8 GB of RAM and NVIDIA EN210 (ASUS) 512MB Ram

Very odd

But I / we still don’t know what you were doing

I had about 8-10 windows open , Dolphin, Firefox, yast…did some snapshots…that’s all

The HDMI output of the Vidocard was not enabled.

The System is a new/clean install 11.3 with all current updates.

How ever the the motherboard has ATI video hardware integrated. …could this be a problem ? The Nvidea driver was installed via repository.

this (desktop effects automatically disabling) happens to me once in a while, rarely. i can imagine that if firefox was displaying a flash video and yast was perhaps busy installing something, some limit might have been reached where desktop effects get disabled to preserve CPU resources. it’s pretty easy to turn them back on again: alt + shift + F12. i wouldn’t be too much concerned about that.

if your MB has an ATI card integrated but you’re not using the drivers, that shouldn’t cause problems.

Solved it…I think, time will tell

Do not know how this happened but

When you right-click on your desktop you get the following window

http://thumbnails26.imagebam.com/10253/409003102529286.jpg](http://www.imagebam.com/image/409003102529286)

Now click on “Activities” to get the following popup

http://thumbnails21.imagebam.com/10253/10da8a102529427.jpg](http://www.imagebam.com/image/10da8a102529427)

In my case there were 9 entries !!!

Reduced it to 4 , which included my main #1 desktop, recreated

Done ! I suspect that the additional entries were so to speak alive and maintained.

So, if the error msg does not come up during the next few days…that’s the solution.

Thanks for looking at my thread

and Cheers from OZ;)

Found out how this happened.

I Did the new install (fresh) leaving the /home partition intact, use the same user name and all my data and settings, window decorations remain intact, except the default will be set to “no different activities” per desktop. This one I change. Then per desktop I have 4 !!! activities, all up 16. This may be to much to handle for X. I know that I once , by wanting to know what that is all about deleted a few, lost the background…but did not bother to further look into it.

i’m not convinced that a bunch of desktop activities are the reason for that. until yesterday, when i cleaned out 4 or 5 activities i didn’t use anymore, i used to have as many and they didn’t seem to cause CPU (or other resource) strain. how often does or did this happen to you, that effects got disabled automatically?

you are right !!!. same problem this morning. Mt theory posted further up is wrong!

annoying !!!

Do you “follow” all the updates in the Release: repo? From your sig, yes.
How long have you been using KDE4, from where? That is, have you taken your KDE4 settings from update to update?
Did you ever try to rebuild the desktop appearance?
Do you have widgets running on the desktop(s)? If yes, are they up-to-date, i.e. still availble from the repos.

Why all these questions? Because it looks like plasma cannot handle something. A dozen screens should not be an issue with your card.

Also, take a look in /home/USERNAME/.xsession-errors right after compositing stops. At the bottom it may give you some hints.

I think I found the problem, my theory was after all right, well partly…

First to your questions:

Do you “follow” all the updates in the Release: repo? From your sig, yes.

Yes

How long have you been using KDE4, from where? That is, have you taken your KDE4 settings from update to update?

Yes…KDE repos

Did you ever try to rebuild the desktop appearance?

Rebuild ? only changed it

Do you have widgets running on the desktop(s)? If yes, are they up-to-date, i.e. still availble from the repos.

NO

Also, take a look in /home/USERNAME/.xsession-errors right after compositing stops. At the bottom it may give you some hints.

Don’t have /home/USERNAME/.xsession-errors the reason might be that I did a partial rebuild this morning.

What I found in .kde4/share/config the file plasma-desktoprc. The entries seamed to correspond with what I found in “Activities”.

What I did, and I would NOT recommend it, was I created a new user and imported this specific config file. This did not hose down my desktop but my Kmail account settings.

So for everyone reading this thread DONT!

The rebuild required only the plasmasetting, window decoration, and email account details.

A better way would have been to create a new user account and import my user files.(The most important folders, Photoalbume, mycorresponce, and some other I back up on a semi-regular basis)

So after this change…no more problems.

thanks Otto

Did it the right way, to many legacy files. Trying to be a smart #$% did not pay off.

Anyway its humming!

cheers

I am having the same problem after the latest updation through “zypper up” and got the latest
nvidia driver 295.40 from 295.20 through nvidia repo.

And while scrolling on firefox there’s a horizontal line appearing on the middle of the screen.

Nvidia driver 295.20 had no such problem.

Help please
My system:
opensuse 12.1 x64 | kde |nvidia geforce 7025/nforce 630a | athlon X2 3 Ghz | 4 GB|
