I’m trying to enable desktop effects, but am unable to get all of the ones I wish to use to work. For example, I would like the desktop cube animation for switching between desktops, but I can’t get it to work. The only effects that currently work are “highlight window,” “login,” “logout,” “shadow,” “taskbar thumbnails,” “dialog parent,” “present windows.” I haven’t been able to figure out what the problem is, so I would appreciate help with troubleshooting the exact problem.
I am pretty unfamiliar with video settings and drivers, and have not been able to find any documents that are either applicable to me, or that I am able to understand.
I am running 11.3 x86_64 with a Radeon HD 5670, radeon driver (I think), Gigabyte P55A-UD4P, Intel Core i7 860. My KDE 4.4.4 Desktop is functional, except for the effects. Please let me know what additional information is needed.
So it’s definitely the radeon driver not supporting HD 5670 yet?
I’ve looked at your practical theory guide, but I’m still not clearly understanding this topic yet.
I’ve tried to install the proprietary driver found in these instructions <http://lizards.opensuse.org/2010/07/15/ati-hd57xxx-flgrx-drivers-under-11-3/>, but when I ran “zypper in kernel-source kernel-syms module-init-tools make gcc libstdc++ libgcc glibc-32bit glibc-devel-32bit fontconfig freetype zlib*”, I received only error messages that nothing could be downloaded or installed. I ended up having to abort, and so still have the radeon driver.
Those installations are basic installs, and not related to graphic driver specifically, although they are needed. Thats a very basic install, so I’m guessing you are very new at this.
Does your PC have an internet connection under Linux ? Post the output of:
zyyper lr -d
You could also try (instead of that 'zypper in … ’ command try going to YaST > Software > Software Management, and select the pattern ‘Base development’ which will install many packages. And also search for and install ‘kernel-syms’ and ‘kernel-source’. Then carry on with the driver install instructions.
I am currently on opensuse, and as far as I can tell I have a decently stable wireless connection at all times. I’m downloading the packages you recommend, then will retry the driver switch & post results later.
Your repos #1 (libdvdcss) and #4 (vlc) are not compatible with #2 (packman) and ultimately could lead to multimedia applications not playing properly. I recommend you remove 1 and #4 and replace all apps from those two removed repos with their equivalents from #2 (packman). However that is not relevevant to your current problem.
As noted above, try (instead of that 'zypper in … ’ command try going to YaST > Software > Software Management, and select the pattern ‘Base development’ which will install many packages. And also search for and install ‘kernel-syms’ and ‘kernel-source’. Then carry on with the driver install instructions.
On a side note, yes I still am pretty green to many faucets of openSuSe/linux, so what sort of problems are you suggesting that I can have between libdvdcss, vlc & packman? Do you mean slight glitches in playback of certain formats, or major system malfunction sort of problems? Vlc is currently my best functioning media player, & I’d be VERY reluctant to give it up.
What I have seen in compatibility issues between Packman and libdvdcss/videolan repositories is some multimedia applications will simply not play certain (or all) audio or video codecs. I suspect that is because the different packagers have some sort of control over where the codecs are located, and they are not in agreement and hence store them in different locations, such that the applications can not find them.
