Desktop Effects In Opensuse 11.0 RC 1

I have OpenSUSE 11.0 RC1 on a HP desktop with Nvidia drivers 173.14.05 installed successfully.

When I tries to select ‘Enable Desktop Effects’ under ‘Look and Feel’, the screen flickers and upon clicking that ‘green check mark’, ‘Enable Desktop Effects’ gets deselected.

Desktop effects / Compiz worked just fine in OpenSUSE 11.0 Beta 3 on the same machine.

Here is the 1st part of ‘glxinfo’ User ‘nullack’ replied (asking for ‘glxinfo’) to my original thread in Suseforums.net but I guess now its ‘Read-Only’ ]

I can tell you what likely happened (as I had the same issue with the ATI closed-source drivers); it’s likely that compositing is turned off (without it, compiz-fusion won’t work). Check /etc/X11/xorg.conf (specifically, the “Device” section) and look for either

Option “XComposite” = “disabled”

OR

Option “XComposite” = “false”

DRI/drm (and AIGLX) will still work if compositing is turned off; however, compiz-fusion won’t. (The ATI closed-source drivers turn compositing off by default due to a persistent driver bug that is still present in the latest [8.5] version of the drivers.) Setting this option to “enabled” or “true” (it’s a Boolean value, so either will work) and restarting X will fix the problem.

(However, see my earlier post (in another thread) about known consequences of enabling compositing with ATI’s closed-source drivers and watch for similar issues with both closed-source and open-source drivers from nVidia and Intel.)

hi ‘PGHammer’

Many thanks for your help. Guess I overlooked /etc/X11/xorg.conf earlier.

Composite was “off” indeed, changed it to “on”

and Desktop Effects / Compiz started working like a charm.

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for this. I get the message about compositing being switched off
in my setup, roo. Do you know if switching it back on is all it takes
with the pre-installed “nv” driver, as I haven’t attempted to iinstall
the “nvidia” driver yet?

http://maxqnzs.com/References.html

Well, I changed “Composite” from “off” to “on” and the box “enable\ desktop effects” is no longer greyed out, and I could play around in the Compiz settings options, but I still don’t see a cube or any difference in desktop behaviour, so I guess I must still be missing something.

Try the command simple-ccsm

Thanks. That confirmed that I need the NVidia driver, not the nv driver:

No compiz manager config found!
which: no fusion-icon in
Checking for Xgl: not present. No whitelisted driver found
SKIP_CHECKS is yes, so continuing despite problems.
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.

It’s not critical, simply I’m really just playing with RC1 until the official release, but now that I have a PC which can handle it better, I am looking forward to giving Compiz a go.

Compiz Fusion does not eat that much Ressources. I know someone who got it running on a PIII 600 Mhz with 416 MB RAM.

I don’t have that powerful a PC; I have a P4 2.6 (Northwood-C) with 1.5 GB of RAM (the X1650PRO AGP is the second-newest card in the system, and I bought it last year; only the X-Fi XtremeGamer is newer). In “computer terms”, my system is a greybeard (not the age of Albus Dumbledore, but more like Rufus Scrimgeour), and what problems I have with compiz are due to the driver bugs, not the system’s hardware.

Not to hijack the forum, but is there a way to make the desktop effects settings stick once they have been enabled? I have to enable the settings every single session as things now stand (with results varying from stuck, non-responsive screen to compiz glitter!).
