Hello,
I just made a fresh install of OpenSuse 13.1 (KDE), and the desktop keeps crashing (around once a day). I am sorry, but I don’t really know what else to say and how to explain it. When it happens, I have Skype, Youtube and Firefox open (actually I use these guys all day long). I can work a few hours, and then Boom ! The internet connection stops working (I’m using Network Manager and a TP-Link wifi adapter), that’s the first sign. I go to check up what’s going on in the down-right panel, I can’t click on it to open and see if my connection is fine. The thing is that at first, the skype icon just next to it still responds (I can open skype by clicking on it, left-click, etc.), I can use the other icons in the panel for a few seconds, and then it’s like a contamination : the whole panel stops working, after that I can’t even log out from the session… just have to reboot.
Thank you in advance!
Did you install any updates so far ?
Output of
zypper lr -d
Did you check the install media / iso download?
I added the packman repository and did everything explained here : openSUSE 13.1 Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - Blogs - openSUSE Forums
I also did a few things when I installed Skype, as it is suggested here : SDB:Skype - openSUSE
Here is what zypper lr -d gives :

I didn’t check the USB I did the installation with. The ISO file was downloaded through torrent.
And your graphics adaptor?
franck@linux-sl4q:~> /sbin/lspci -nnk | grep VGA -A2
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0102] (rev 09)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. Device [1462:7740]
Kernel driver in use: i915
Is that what you are talking about ?
Correct. But that should be fine.
Though there were some bugs with the released intel drivers in 13.1, which should be OK for you if you have run the updates.

Skype blows my GNOME 3 system out of the water, too. I’ve uninstalled it
and things stabilized.
It seems that Skype isn’t being updated or maintained very well for Linux
any more.

I would willingly get rid of Skype too, but I really need it for work. Too bad…
It is happening again : It Is Happening Again - YouTube
Is reinstalling after checking the install media the only solution?

For stuff like that that’s been a problem for me, I’ve tended to use
things like AndroVM and an Android virtual machine. The Citrix
GoToMeeting app was like that for me - the Linux version didn’t work very
well, and the Windows version in a VM kept disconnecting.
Maybe a solution like that would work for you.

Thank you Jim, but I need to think :
- Is it really Skype that is causing the troubles ?
- Since I need to transfer files, react to notification, etc. I don’t think having it in a VM is the best solution for me (although the idea is interesting). I could try though to work with some other program : for ex., I can use Pidgin. I know that Skype has to be turned on while I use it, but maybe it could make a little difference ?

Try not starting it for a day… If you have another computer, use that one to atay connected.

One of the best ways to find out is to uninstall it and see if the
problem can be reproduced.

An Android VM might not be the best solution in that case, but a Windows
VM should work as well - and you can use VirtualBox shared folders there
to deal with the file transfers, notifications, etc.

Unfortunately, I haven’t had yet the occasion to set a VM. Anyway, I found out something new that seems to cause the trouble : the crash happens every time the internet connection disappears for a minute (I have other people around me that confirm the connection problem at that right moment). Also today, after such a problem, no crash, but the Network manager was unable to connect when the internet connection came back. I had to reboot.
Does that make sense ?
I understand what you say
But it makes no sense that it should behave this way.
Hi all,
Just a guess: Is it possible there is a tmp or cache directory using up a (too small?) partition?
Like in the past one used to have a separate var partition. If e.g. /var/tmp or /var/cache is filled up subsequently by some application (dunno about Skype) and the partition gets full you may get problems. But that should be easy to detect and maybe you should have seen a failure message of some kind in that case?
Best regards
kasi

The first thing i always do after i installed opensuse is enable the kernel
Sysrq keys.
But i’m glad to see that they are now (13.1) enabled by default.
So what am i talking about?
Have a read here:
http://www.susegeek.com/general/linux-kernel-magic-sysrq-keys-in-opensuse-for-crash-recovery/

These are key combinations that allow you to unmount and sync your disks
kill all running programs and reboot or shutdown your system.
Very handy in case of a crash!
It helped me a lot of times, but sometimes my usb keyboard won’t respond
either and then i have to do an ugly reboot.
The most usefull key combinations for me are:
ALT-Printscreen-i to kill programs
ALT-Printscreen-s to sync my drives
ALT-Printscreen-u to unmount my partitions
And at last,
ALT-Printscreen-b to reboot.

Hi,
I have a Dell Inspiron 660S with integrated Intel graphics.
I use 12.3 with no issues - always stable.
I upgraded using the standard zypper method - and this functioned ok - and updated the repositories and always had a firefox/thunderbird issue.
In searching for the solution on here - it seems that some people with integrated Intel graphics have an issue.
i downloaded 13.1 and this failed to install on a fresh hard disk.
swap space is not the issue nor is RAM.
My threads are friefox crashing as this was the only program i used.
Regards,
Shadders.
