Hey,
Hope you can give me an idea or hint.
Feel a bit silly to ask but does the live CD for the Xfce Desktop Environment
build on openSUSE 11.3 found on Derivatives - openSUSE work ?
Got this issue with dbus-launch and “Unable to contact settings server”.
I am new to openSuse, have never used it before. But I would like to run it
with my favourite desktop Xfce. So I downloaded the live CD from the site
above.
I start up computer with CD and end up in TWM which don’t help me much. Of historical
interest a page says about TWM, it predate Linux !!! Get out from there and find myself
at a login screen. Switch to Xfcm and try to login with linux / root and get “Unable to
contact settings server”.
Have checked on the net and found, for example, this page
LINUX • Thema anzeigen - (erledigt) Inoffizielle Xfce-Live-CD läuft nicht
But this just puzzle me even more. For surely since this is a know issue it should be
resolved on the live CD. As it is now the CD is of little use, can’t install anything
with it.
Not so keen on downloading the DVD…
Just would like to know if the live CD with xfce is a lost case and if so let
people know. If not, what to do ?
I never tried this older 11.3 live cd for xfce (it is not an official live
cd), so I cannot comment if it works or not, if it really does not work in
general it should of course be removed from the wiki.
If you need a xfce live cd you may have better luck looking at what is
available in suse studio
http://susegallery.com/search?q=xfce
I see there are some based on 11.4.
I can tell you that xfce works in 11.4 when installed from dvd or via net
install.

Hey
Thanks for the link to Suse gallery, have saved it.
After some trial I found a XFCE Desktop 32 bit (11.4) by Balazs Kutil. Excellent no doubt but to barebone for me, don’t even know how to install it.
But what I need is a workbench and not a playground so I have to give up on Suse The terminal don’t scare me but it just take to much time and requires knowledge which I don’t have, yet anyway.
Of course I could just line up and download the DVD. But there is a cap on the my net connection, pass it and I to have spend rest of the month watching the net through a straw.

If that is your problem and you are still interested in openSUSE and xfce,
the simple solution is to download the net install disk.
http://software.opensuse.org/114/
It is the fourth option and a small download.
During the installation you can select which desktop to install it shows
KDE, Gnome and other, if you select other you will find xfce.
Benefit of the net installer is it only downloads what you need in your
system.

Of course you can also choose xubuntu if you need a full installable live cd
with as a workbench first.

Hey
Thanks again…
Have indeed used Xubuntu in the past, but it was a couple of years ago. Left ?buntu due to strange behaviour, kill for example did not work properly I recall.
Tried the network installer but quickly found another snag. Your are assumed to have an wired Ethernet connection. There is no strait forward method for dealing with USB modems during installation.
There is a work around for this I am sure but it might not be that easy. Can’t find anything about setting up USB modem during installation. Mine is a bit old and run without problem under Linux.
But of same reason I am in bad luck. Just tried VectorLinux 6.0 and that dist have issues finding the CD-ROM after boot. But that is a story for another forum.
So, sadly, Suse remain absent from my system.
