[Dell Inspiron 1420] Video problem in Totem and VLC

I have a Inspiron 1420 with openSUSE 11.0. I’ve installed all the restricted codecs and updated the machine. My problem is that the video displays only when totem is in “Fullscreen mode”. Otherwise just the audio plays. Same thing happens in VLC which doesn’t even output sound (in either mode).
Is there a problem with the Intel Video driver? Or VLC has a problem with PulseAudio?
Anybody else have such an issue? Any help would be welcome.

Yes.

Try changing the output video module setting of your multimedia player from ‘auto’ or ‘xv’ (xvideo) to ‘x11’.

You can also try to disable “the cube” / “3D-special desktop effects”.

Also, ensure you have not mixed up videolan packaged codecs (or players) with packman packaged players (or codecs).

Setting output video module to X11 video in vlc did the trick for video but totem has no such option in its preferences dialog. How can I set it to X11 video as well. Plus vlc still gives no audio. I’ve tried changing the output module to PulseAudio but audio only splutters. Otherwise audio is working fine.

Its quite possible you have a mix of videolan and packman packaged applications for multimedia, which is known to cause problems, as the packages packaged by the two different groups of packages are known not to always be compatible with each other. I recommend (with the exception of libdvdcss) that you replace all of your videolan packaged applications, with packman packaged applications. In particular replace the videolan packaged vlc and libffmpeg0 with the packman packaged versions.
