First try either the external keyboard or the monitor, which one is causing the problem?

What is the normal method to wake up the laptop?

Please run

sudo zypper in inxi xdpyinfo Mesa-demo-x
sudo inxi -U

Then, while both displays are lit up normally in running X, provide here from Konsole or other X terminal input/output from the following

inxi -GSayz

I couldnt reproduce it. it works today and i cant explain it . appreciate the responses .

Connecting monitor with HDMI cable with laptop or monitor being powered on is dangerous.

The HDMI spec says Hot Plug-able for 10,000 matings - the problem sometimes occurs when the neutral power of the two devices are not in common and a ground loop occurs - It still will occur if powered off and one of the devices could be cooked. Laptops do not share any 110/220V power like a DVD and a TV - so there is almost no likelihood of damage (unless the Monitor/TV has neutral and ground reversed - not likely as most are now laptop computers internally if it is a smart TV)

My guess is the BIOS on the Dell 7400 never saw the HDMI plugged in until the unit was power cycled.

Dell released an update BIOS which fixed the problem.

thanks for everyone who helped.

I’m super impressed that the release candidate was flawless. even the OEM windows initially had trouble with the external manager until the display settings were adjusted but openSUSE worked right out of the box !
