Defining default applications via command line/terminal

Hi,

I recently upgraded from 11.3 to 11.4 succesfully. I had to reinstall several applications and, some of them, can’t be configured as default from the control panel (e.g. Opera as default browser, VLC as default media player). The problem is that droplists at the prefered applications don’t show any other than the default ones, Firefox and Totem

Is there a way I can change these settings via command line or a way to fix what applications are shown at the control panel?

Thanks in advance

Select other
manually type opera

next time you should be able to see opera in the list to set default

Thanks for the quick answer. Please note no option is displayed at all. When I click the dropdown list it only contains Firefox, no other element is in the list

If you are using KDE, go to System settings>Default applications and then System settings>File Associations. In the latter, change the order of the programs associated with a filetype.

I’m using Gnome. Since I updated to OpenSUSE 11.3 no other applications are displayed in the preferred application module, apart from Firefox and Totem

Any suggestion? Can this be done via a command line?

In Gnome you can set the prefered application for a file type by right
clicking on a file and select properties, there you can set it.
From the command line I have no idea. But if you find out please tell us.

PC: oS 11.3 64 bit | Intel Core2 Quad Q8300@2.50GHz | KDE 4.6.1 | GeForce
9600 GT | 4GB Ram
Eee PC 1201n: oS 11.4 64 bit | Intel Atom 330@1.60GHz | KDE 4.6.0 | nVidia
ION | 3GB Ram

I deinstalled both browsers and reinstalled Opera with no luck. Now the Preferred Applications show no browser at all :frowning:

I also tried right-clicking with some files but with DVDs is not possible. Now I’m really doubting if I did my migration from 11.3 to 11.4 correctly…

Try the following just to see if it is a problem with some leftover
configuration files from your previous 11.3 version.

Create a new user (which did not exist before) and then login to gnome as
that new user. See if you have the same problems or if you can configure
what you need. If yes, you have most likely a problem with old configuration
files.

Thanks a lot! I created a test user and the default application for Web was “Web browser”, when I started this via Gnome Do it asked which browser to use and I selected Opera. Now Opera is selectable at the Preferred applications menu

This didn’t worked with the multimedia section but is less important

Thanks again!
