Deciding gold medals

I like to see Olympic gold medals awarded to he/she who crosses the finish line first, or who has the most goals, or can lift the most weight, or can pin their opponent. Personally, I don’t like to see gold medals awarded because a judge was bribed to give a higher score, or has a certain prejudice, or because they believe one person/team deserves it because they have been doing the sport longer than someone else (have you ever seen a figure skater win gold on their first Olympics?)

Nothing against the athletes that participate in such sports. They work darn hard and deserve all the accolades and respect they can get. It’s the system of judging them and awarding them medals that sticks in my craw.

But even there you have all of the controversy with doping and who bumped
who, or some other perceived sleight. Seems to me like the Olympics are
more politics than the pinnacle of human endeavor. You have to applaud the
honest athletes, but you have to keep a wary eye on the whole process. I’m
not even convinced on the doping charges anymore, seems like they are often
rigged as well.

GofBorg,

No system is perfect. At least they are trying.

So that should not prevent you from enjoying Gymnastics.

Why even bother to have a race if there are no winners or losers? Why have an event at all? Competition is what drives innovation and creativity. Without competition, we wouldn’t be typing on computers right now. We’d be using quill pens. Also, I really don’t want to turn on the TV and see an event where there is no clear cut winner or winning team. That’s just not fun.

I’m just not an “artsy” type of guy.

I can accept that.
