Installed Ati hi def driver and lost desktop icons, menu-bars and access to the start menu. I could not revert to the old driver. I may make Ubuntu my default.

become root, go to /etc/X11. You’ll find a backup of your previous xorg.conf. Just rename the current one and use the backup, or use sax2 to generate a fresh one.
