dead keys no more working after update

Hi,

Unfortunately the dead keys are no more dead on my X11-display since one of the latest updates (but I don’t know exactly which one).

For example: when I press “dead_circumflex”, a circumflex is displayed, without waiting for a second key.

How could I get back the dead keys please? I need them very often…

I’ve found a work-around:

“unset XMODIFIERS” in ~/.xinitrc

Is this the right solution? Are there side-effects?
