MySQL is widely used: http://www.mysql.com/

kev.
Yep. MySQL, that’s all around. And it’s good, fast, stable. And, with some effort (well documented) fully accessible through OpenOffice.org Base.
Where to get How to Program db field and link!
I am uses to filermaker pro!
You can download hundreds of free PDF books from FlazX - Welcome to your Computer & IT learning center, it’s the best resource for tech. books IMHO, just search for MySQL… and of course there are a lot of online tutorials too.
I haven’t gotten into MySQL or PosgtreSQL yet but I’ve heard good things about Postgre.
Filemaker pro has a number of good features, the multi-user aspect is awesome in it.
Base, the last I’ve seen, is a far cry from Access. It’s a good “base” (pun-intended) but still far behind.
Since I work in .NET, of course Access and SQL Server are my primary tools.
Never tried Firebird yet.
I try to find the back and front DB, I have been on google for mysql to make the Databass and look at suse software search!
Filemaker is not on linux or bsd! That is why I am trying to get other DB to will work for me! Inter link openoffice DB dose not work vary well!
thank’s’ for the help!
It used to be free but now I think they are charging for it, but Aqua Data Studio allowed connecting to a number of different database types.
Maybe I need to ask good data base manager for the front and the back side of the basebase!
I run opensuse, free bsd
most of the base manager manager I look at are for ms win
Before you dive into mysql, how complicated are your database files? If your needs are not too complex, you may find sqlite is sufficient. It can be run fairly easily with OpenOffice.
If your needs are complex, then read the mysql documentation or a standard textbook on mysql before you start.
In Linux, there is none of the handholding and hiding of the grubby details that you will find on Windows.

my filemaker on the apple II GS was all

So what you are describing is a hierarchical database structure whereas mysql is relational. That could cause problems.
Just had a look at Wikipedia’s entry on Filemaker and see that it is a relational database but with tools built in to create links with (sub)tables. With mysql, and indeed most relational databases, you have to do that work yourself.
It may be a bit of overkill, but there is also IBM’s U2 systems.
UniData
IBM UniData® is an extended relational database and integrated development environment for embedding in vertical solutions for the small to medium business (SMB) market.UniVerse
IBM UniVerse® is an extended relational database designed for rapid, cost-effective vertical application development.
At my last place of employment we used a Unidata-based Pick system on a mainframe. Definitely different from SQL and relational databases.
There was also an open source variant being worked on, but the name slips my mind at this moment.
I’ve always thought it would be interesting to set it up at home to fool around with it but I have never gotten myself stabilized enough at home to try it out.

A lot of people like MySQL as the back end and phpMyAdmin as the front:
http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/index.php although personally (yes I
know I’m insane) I typically use the MySQL module of webmin to administer.

Both Postgresql and MySQL (backends) are on the OpenSuse oss
repository. For a front end i suggest one of the java based ones.
Nor do i think much of open office base default for either use.
have not find how to set up tables
find a good forum for sql
