d. installation proc. laptop stays idle fever can't shut dow

Before I`ve started the installation process a copuple of times already to see some stuff, test different partition configurstions, etc, and always aborted installation. Everything went right, installation process proceeded until perform imnstallation, there I aborted, etc. NOw I just gave ext3 format to the partition with Partition Magic 8.0, that 's the only thing I changed, then rebooted with the DVD (openSUSE 11.0)and everything went right till “System analisis” and there it settles there forever!!! At inializing package manager", at 90%. The mouse wirks but I cannot abort, click on help, F1, F11, F12 do not work, the laptop does not react to anything, I even powered it off and nothing!! Mouse still works but I cannot even restart the computer. Also ejected the DVD and it does not advance. WHAT CAN I DO? ctrl+ alt+ del doesn’t work either. Should I take off the battery??

The laptop is HP COmpaq 6510b, core 2 du intel.

Just keep the power off button pushed till it goes off.U will end up with a broken installation ofc.
I think u should burn the installation dvd again and on a better quallity blank dvd.
Plz do that to ensure that installation doesnt fail due to bad installation medium

after pressing 5 SECONDS power-off button it shut down…The thing is why it did this and if I have to do something else, if the disk IS BROKEN NOW or what, will try power on and see what happens…any suggestions/idea are welcomd!!!

thanks, I’ve just seen your post, I replied before seen yours. I did the media check before and it turned out to be allright, DVD is quite good quality, Imation (even I decided tu use this brand 'cause I was told in the shop I bought the notebook DVD recorder ONLY writes OK in Imation media…'I should not use memorex or SONY either). Anyway, thw only thing that changed was formatting the partition created with PMagic 8.0 ext3.

Anyway, yes, media quality…an issue…

Think I should at least do a diskcheck, right?

Appart from this, after starting the computer everything seemed to work allright, thank God…

Try using another partitioning tool like gparted.Download the gparted live cd brun it on a disk and use this application to do the partitioning.
What i would suggest if u think u could do it, is to leave the partition u are about to install opoensuse as unallocated space and use opensuse’s partitioning tool to format and set the FS.

thanks for the info, I can do that (leaving unalllocated space instead of creating a partition), yes, it seems like it was Partition Magic…
