D-bus and dhcpcd error after login

I’m currently running opesuse 11.3 xfce i586 version. When I log-in gksu asks me to enter my root password then I receive a dhcpcd bug as follows:

Could not connect to wicd's D-bus interface. Check the wicd log for error messages

and

The wicd daemon has shut down. The UI will not function properly until it is started

.
Then I noticed that not only wicd was affected by this bug, blueman and xfce-power-manager stopped working too.
I started investigating this issue by checking some log fies in the filesystem, the first file I checked was localmessages stored in /var/log/ and this is what I found:

When I tried to reboot my machine as average user, I was asked again insert my root password! I would appreciate the opensuse community support to help me debugging/fixing this issue. Thanks

A check of Yast runlevels indicates that wicd is starting in levels 2, 3 and 5, which seems right. There is also a B level, presumably boot, clicking on that, and hal and dbus, fixes the problem. Wicd now starts on boot.
So, Yast -- System Services(Runlevel) -- Expert Mode -- Highlight WICD -- click on B -- accept popup re hal and dbus -- reboot.

However, it didn’t fix my problem. Wicd does not throw this error at every boot for me. At times, it does not ask for the root password and connects successfully.

As a general comment, it might have been better to have “wicd” somewhere in your subject line, since your question pertains to that.

I’ve only briefly experimented with wicd, so I might not be able to provide much help.

The particular message “Could not connect to wicd’s D-bus interface. Check the wicd log for error messages” seems to be one that you standardly get if wicd is not running when you login. The wicd client attempts to start it (asks for root permission), but I still get that message. If I then logout of KDE and login again, I can then use wicd.

Since setting wicd to start automatically at run level 5, I no longer see that message, and it seems to work. However, I haven’t experimented enough to be sure.

I did go into yast, and set the network cards to use “ifup” rather than “NetworkManager”. I’m not sure if that is needed, but it does prevent any chance of interference between NetworkManager and wicd. It seems to still be possible to use wicd.

I have not yet discovered any advantage to wicd over NetworkManager, except that I can use “ifup” so that when at home the system connects to my home network before I login to KDE (due to the “ifup”).

I will probably revert to using NetworkManager after a little more experimentation.

Also, I believe now that the root cause of this bug is neither caused by wicd nor d-bus; it’s actually caused by the failure to start up of hal-daemon during boot. I reached that conclusion because I remembered the first error message appeared on screen was unexpected/sudden stop of hal. I tried to search for a newer version of hal to upgrade hoping it may fix this bug but I didn’t find any newer package at opensuse.org find additional packages feature. Any Suggestion?

The only reason why I prefer wicd over networkmanager because I’m an xfce user and I prefere to avoid installing kde/gnome apps which require installing additional libraries.

Interesting. Yes, I expect a haldaemon failure would cause such problems. Is anything relevant being logged? (The only logged info I find on hald are in /var/log/boot.omsg, and seem to be relevant only to the current boot). Failures of hald could hint at hardware problems.

Yes, I realized that after I had posted my last reply. I tried xfce, and rather liked it. But I switched to KDE to have NetworkManager (I didn’t think of installing wicd at that time). I am reasonably happy with KDE. I especially like the feature that I can set it to automatically disable the synaptics touchpad if there is as mouse plugged in.

nrickert, would you recommend that I should wait for this bug to occur again in order to copy the content of /var/log/boot.omsg and post it here for further analysis?

That’s probably the best idea. If haldaemon fails or doesn’t start, then post anything related to it from boot.omsg. Maybe copy that file to another directory, so you can access it after any reboot. If there’s anything useful in those logs, there is probably somebody at this forum who knows how to interpret it.
