open YaST, go Software Management > Patterns (tab) then you will see you
have Gnome Desktop and Base System already checked, just check the KDE4
Desktop Environment and Base System, and hit Accept…when it is all
done, right click your Gnome desktop, pick Leave, then Log Out, that
will put you at a login screen…in the lower left is a “Sessions”
click on that any there will be several environments listed…click KDE,
ok and log in…now, the next time you boot your machine it will go to
KDE…if you don’t normally log in it will go there automatically…to
get back to gnome you have to go to the log in screen and select it in
Sessions, again…

KDE appears to be robust as I am using it now.

Why on earth?

You have the system installed already, you do not need to download any CD
or DVD. Just add whatever desktop you want to your current install. You can
have several desktops installed simultaneously, this is not windows.
