Installed openSUSE 12.1 AMD64 KDE, on a new laptop with 4GB of ram.
Noticed that Firefox takes about 30 seconds to startup (from clicking Firefox icon to able to see/use Firefox).
Once startup, Firefox performs normally.
Have tried re-installing Firefox and deleting the old profile but the result is the same.
Is this normal in openSUSE?
Any way to speed up Firefox startup process?

remove all addons would probably help…
overall Firefox is the largest, most resource hungry and capable of
the browsers…
if you want ‘fast’ install Opera or Chrome/Chromium…
if you want faster install Opera in XFCE or LXDE (not Gnome or KDE)
and, i’d guess the 32 bit version is as fast, or measurably faster than
the 64…

ok. tell us your hardware cpu, disk type speed etc etc etc…never mind,

streaming a movie while also downloading a torrent and how many addons

on my machine (listed in my sig), with my addons, and my startup page 30
seconds is about normal for the FIRST launch after boot…
now, if i shut down right now and wait three to five seconds (until it
is shut down completely) and then launch FF again it comes up in about
less than 5 seconds…

How many addons do you have? The more addons you have, the longer it
takes FF to start.

Thanks for the replies, I’ll try to answer all your query/suggestion below :
Firefox : Firefox for openSUSE 12.1 Version 9.0.1.
Hardware : Thinkpad T410, CPU-I5, 4GB RAM, Nvidia Graphics Card
Reinstall Firefox in openSUSE.
Deleted all addons and the ~/.mozilla folder and restart Firefox a few times.
Restart computer with no major application running, no chat/email/torrent/games/office etc.
Result : Same slow starting up, approx 26 to 30 seconds.
Dual boot Debian on same laptop, with addons, the startup of Firefox (Iceweasel) is around 2 to 3 seconds.

please do this:
-click the the home icon to show your startup page
-close all other firefox tabs
-open a terminal, into it type
free
firefox
-enter ‘free’ and then enter ‘firefox’ and when pressing the Enter
button the second time, note the exact number of seconds until firefox
appears, and report that back to this thread…
-leave the terminal open
-go to http://forums.opensuse.org
-using firefox’s close button, shut down firefox
-from the terminal window, copy/paste both the input and full output
back to this thread using the instructions here: http://goo.gl/i3wnr

and, one more question: if you go into the firefox menu Edit >
Preferences > General and in the “Startup” section at the top of the
preferences dialog you spin the selector from “Show my home page” or
“Show my windows and tabs from last time” and set instead “Show a blank
page” how does that affect your startup seconds?
note: i can’t promise any of this will lead to a quicker firefox startup
(how does Iceweasel run on openSUSE?) and, perhaps it best to follow the

let us know if you made any speed up progress, or not…

Clicked the the home icon to show startup page (which happens to be a blank page)
Firefox startup with only the blank page (no other tabs)
Opened a terminal, into it type as requested and visited this forum.
Using firefox’s close button, shut down firefox, output of terminal as below:

i guess you have already noted that i responded to your initial post
that an about 30 second opening was ‘normal’…so, i’ve used nothing but
KDE (except for very brief looks at others) since about SUSE 9.3 or so,
and therefore i’d gotten used to FF’s slow lumbering way of unfolding
like it is stuck in heavy syrup…and therefore i plan for it…
by that i mean, i click to start FF and then do something else–i do NOT
click and sit waiting and watching FireSloth…i mean, i don’t usually
start FF more than once a day (when i boot) and that goes like this:
-click to open FF
-click to open Thunderbird-
-click to open YaST
-walk away from the machine (to start the coffee, or whatever)
-come back to machine and see the main three ready to roll–and care
less how long it took them to unfold and set up shop–i mean, to me it
seems like instant startup because i do not sit and watch it…
maybe someday i will experiment with having the system boot up and
auto-start those three (and more) so i can just press the power button
and walk away…
to me, there are more things in life worth worrying about than to piddle
with the difference between a few seconds opening times when i do not
have to sit and wait.
ymmv, and i acknowledge that other folks have other needs that, though
different, are as valid to them as mine are to me…if i needed instant
startup of system/apps i would not have purchased this sufficient, but
underpowered Atom.

I also have a machine where I noticed firefox is starting unusually slow
(about 20 sec) every time (not any faster after the first run). No other
programs running, blank page, no extra tabs, same addons, both up to date.
It is a quadcore 2.4GHz and it takes more time than a dual core 2GHz with
less ram… Both 12.1 64 bit. The only difference is the version of KDE (the
default 4.7 one in the slow FF, and 4.8 in the laptop). I will install 4.8
to see if it makes any difference.
The system activity is not showing anything unusual in the use of ram or
CPU.

Since installing KDE 4.8 and updating firefox to v10 it seems to be running
fine now. No idea what the slow startup might have been due to…

How did you install KDE 4.8? I’m using openSuse 12.1 and KDE 4.7.
Doesn’t it create problems when, for example, I install K3B from Packman repo?

I had the same issue as you. After some searching and guessing I realized it was a DNS timeout due to a wrongly configured hosts file. Please check and correct your hosts file if necessary. The issue should (hopefully) be resolved
