Hoping some one else has experienced this and know what caused it.
I left my PC powered up and doing absolutely nothing for 1 week. When I came back and plugged in a usb drive the system failed to pick it up. No notification and no signs of it in dolphin.

never happened to me since i don’t leave my PC on w/o using it for so
long, but i seem to remember that there used to be some power management
bugs with certain hardware configurations. KDE 4.6.0 isn’t what KDE
considers ‘stable;’ that would be 4.6.3 now, with not much changes in
functionality / features, but several bug fixes.
i’ve seen it (rarely) that USB sticks didn’t get picked up automatically,
but this didn’t happen in a consistent or reproducible way. if you don’t
feel like logging out & in, you can always type “fdisk -l” into a (root)
terminal and mount the partition you want manually.
