CUPS printer driver?

So we are now printing on our color Xerox machine – a Workcentre 7553.

When I look in the drivers (Suse 12.2) for for xerox devices available
this one is not listed. I tried another Workcentre and it works OK,
but I can’t get it to print in color.

I’m currently using “Xerox WorkCenter 7345 Foomatic/pixcolor” and
yes, I turned on “color” in the device options.

Is there someplace else I can find drivers? If I do, how do I install
it.

Maybe this will help:

"pxlcolor" and HPIJS are the only drivers that currently print in colour. Throughput = 26 Foomatic entry made by PPDtoXML T/G 0.18 on 2008-05-25

This bug report also discusses the ‘color printing’ issue you’ve described with some advice about using alternative drivers. I hope it works for you.

So I tried the HPIJS driver. I tried setting the output quality to “From
Printout Mode”, and since it had several color options, I randomly tried
“300 Color CMYK” and 600 BestColor CMYK" as well.
All printed the testpage in greyscale.

Since it is a brand new machine, I tried a direct copy of a color
page and it worked fine. Our IT person said he printed color from
his windows machine with no problems.

I think it must be the drivers. We couldn’t print in color from
a Ubuntu machine also using the 7345 driver.

Larry

That’s a shame. Strange that others have reported success though.

I have no doubt about that

Yes, the pages that I linked to suggest that too.

You could try configuring as a generic postscript printer. Maybe that will work.

I tried “Generic PostScript Printer Foomatic/Postscript (recommended)” and
no difference – prints everything in B&W.

I was sent a tar file from our local Xerox office, but I’m not really sure what to
do with it. Not obvious (a) if it’s the right thing or (b) how to install it.

Larry

Likely it is one of these:

WorkCentre 7328/7335/7345/7346 with built-in controller Drivers & Downloads

The tar files need unpacking first. They contain readme and setup script files. Usually just a matter of running from a terminal, then configuring via CUPS web interface. I doubt that they’ll work for you, based on the bug report I linked to. YMMV.

You best bet to progress this might be to contact Xerox for support:

OK – Since my color useage is small and since we do have another color
printer which I can talk to properly, I think I’ll wait till xerox provides a
driver for this Workcentre which is included in a Suse distribution (12.3, 13.1??).

As always, thanks for the help.
