Hi!
I tried to add a Canon printer in cups with leap15.6 which is connected locally via usb.
Normally (until leap 15.5) I just had to select one entry from the dozens of listed printer drivers and it worked. Probably it’s because of a newer CUPS version.
But now with leap 15.6 i am asked in the “make:” area to select either “(Fuji Xerox)”, “Generic”,“HP”,“Postscript”,“Raw”,“Ricoh” or to provide a PPD file (filechooser) → no Canon entry.
The same via yast - printer. it seems that no “driver package” is available for canon. There is no PPD file for my printer.
How can I get back these dozens of listed Canon drivers?
Thanks in advance. I searched for cups" with tag 15.6 and entries from the last 6 months but no one had the same problem.
Canon MX885 (combined with scanner). It is recognized in CUPS as “Canon MX880 series” and for that there were drivers available in the old CUPS (until Leap 15.5)
No, I haven’t installed drivers from Canon. Because there are no for this specific printer for linux and it wasn’t necessary (until Leap 15.5).
Canon does not supply drivers for all its products, and as far as Linux is concerned, their policy is to supply the driver only once when a new product is released. No subsequent updates are issued for Linux.
One of the reasons why I prefer EPSON, whose drivers and utilities are available here and updated from time to time.
Thank you for the tip, @Wolfheri
I tried it with the over 14 years old driver you’ve linked but it doesn’t work (installed but printer doesn’t print).
I’m still happy with the Gutenprint drivers which work pretty well.
