Ok,

My openSUSE machine with the issue

I’m assuming that you have ghostscript-9.14pre15rc1-53.1 installed (which is why the unusual gs version reported).

I wonder if your Lubuntu install is even using the same printer driver? I ask this because you haven’t mentioned the splix driver, and the ML-1610 printer is also supported by a foomatic and ghostscript filters (drivers). So, we could be comparing apples and oranges here.

In other words, you could try configuring your openSUSE machine to use the alternative drivers. They’d probably handle the problematic PDF differently.

To find out what driver is currently configured, you need to examine the relevant PPD file in the /etc/cups/ppd/ directory.

For example, if using foomatic, the PPD contains

*cupsFilter:    "application/vnd.cups-postscript 100 foomatic-rip"
*cupsFilter:    "application/vnd.cups-pdf 0 foomatic-rip"

which effectively treats the printer as a postscript (level 3) printer.

If using the ghostscript filter, the PPD contains

*cupsFilter:  "application/vnd.cups-raster 0 rastertospl"

which generates Samsung Printer Language (SPL II) output for the printer.

I don’t own a Samsung printer, so haven’t examined the .ppd file associated with the splix driver.

Showing us that doesn’t tell anything. You have to examine the contents (eg with an editor or the cat command)

cat /etc/cups/ppd/samsungml1610.ppd|grep cupsFilter

That will tell us for sure which filter us in use.

The lubuntu uses basic “Add printer > Network printer”, It doesn’t have Splix ideed.

That’s my point. Maybe you need to reconfigure your printer in the openSUSE OS and choose a different driver.

Just to correct myself with the earlier post about alternative drivers. The foomatic approach uses the free ‘gdi’ driver to convert the postscript into the Samsung printer language. The second driver I referred to (is not ghostscript related), but uses rastertospl to generate the required printer language. This driver is offered as part of the Samsung Uinified Linux Driver package

which is downloaded as a tarball, extracted, and installed via an install script. (I must have installed that sometime in the past to help a user with installing it.)

You can add another printer, even if it connects to the same one, with a
different driver. Just name it differently. I see in my system (splix is
not installed) an entry “Samsung ML-1610 foomatic/gdi (en)”.

I will delete all printer entries and add it again first using default driver, then splix.

I found another PDF wich doens’t print.

Ok so I re-added the printer and selected Foomatic-GDI as driver. Now when trying to print, it doesn’t print the “problem PDFs” but also nothing appears in CUPS Web Interface, no error, the Job is marked as Completed but nothing prints. I opened up CUPS error log and all I see are two lines.

E [18/Sep/2014:18:15:40 +0300] Unable to bind socket for address [v1.::1]:631 - Cannot assign requested address.
E [18/Sep/2014:18:15:40 +0300] Unable to bind socket for address 127.0.0.1:631 - Address already in use.

Printing other files work just fine, just the problematic PDFs are giving me headaches.

Will try something else and get back here.

No, I got three different PDFs, all different sources.

I also noticed, the problematic PDFs doesn’t have number of pages within jobs list in CUPS, maybe they are sent by the PDF reader malformed or something ?

The ones with 1 page count are PDFs that printed, the Unknown page number ones are the faulty ones.

And the time stamps matches the problem? It is not specific to a print job.

You could try setting in “/etc/cups/cupsd.conf”

Ok, here’s what I just did:
I opened up those problematic PDFs using Chrome’s integrated PDF reader and guess what ? It printed just fine ! :open_mouth:

OK where did you print from before?

Try saving them from chrome and then use the previous method on the saved version. Does that work??

It is probably a syntax error in the files and the Chrome PDF code corrected it

I use Okular for PDFs, Okular does’n want to print them. I open the problematic PDFs in Chrome and they print fine.
