Cuda + Nvidia + bumblebee + codecs "safe" way

I am reporting on 2022-11-29, on Tumbleweed this method works on my Lenovo P51 with Xeon E3-1535m CPU and Nvidia Quadro M2200 GPU. As long as I install Nvidia driver as G05 instead of default G06 selected when installing cuda.

The downside is with Nouveau external displays work out of the box, but Bumblebee+Nvidia fails with external displays. Also… I feel like I am a bit too old try to get it fixed… I really wish someone else would keep supporting the Bumblebee

Sadly, I must report that this no longer works with Kernel 6. In fact, /etc/modprobe.d/ does not look the same in Kernel 6 and also mkinitrd does not work anymore.

“mkinitrd” was removed from Tumbleweed.

Use:

dracut -f --regenerate-all

Yes, I saw you mentioning it in another post and used that to re-compile the kernel but unforunately things are just structured differently with kernel 6 and I just don’t have enough time currently to investigate this.

I really do want to keep Bumblebee alive and I will for kernel 5, but 6 is just a different animal and I don’t think I have the time to put something together.

Besides Optimus is going away with the dinosarus.

I just tried prime and native nvidia still breaks laptops. Oh well… I will have to put up with nouveau for the time being.
