ctrl/fct/alt key adjustment?

Both the ctrl and alt keys conspire to activate the “special” keys (screen brightness, sound, etc.) rather than targeting the f1, f2, etc., keys. Is there a setting in KDE (default 11.3 install on a pavilion dv7t x86_64 intel i7) that can adjust this? The ctrl key is used a lot by KDE, so I’d like it to target the function keys, not the “special” keys. On my laptop there is also “fn” and ‘windows’ keys but they do not seem to do anything at this point, at least in KDE.

TIA!!!

Figured it out myself - it turns out that the fX keys are the “shifted-functions” not the “base assignment” of the keys on the keyboard itself!! So you have to hold the ‘fn’ key to select f1, f2, etc. Strange but true!

On my computer, the usual setting could be restored by setting the appropriate flag in the BIOS

the behavior of ctrl alt del is set in /etc/inittiab. ther is a section crtlaltdel to setup what will happen if you press this key combination.

On my laptop you can swap between having “special” or the function keys. Settings are in the BIOS
