Creating a Certificate Signing Request : who is "Internet Widgits Pty Ltd"?

After creating my CSR and before submitting it, I did a verification on the information with in the CSR:

Subject: C = US, ST = xxxxxxxx, L = xxxxxxxx, O = Internet Widgits Pty Ltd, CN = www.domain.com, emailAddress = administrator@domain.com

some of the optional info I just hit enter, but where did “Internet Widgits Pty Ltd” come from and is this required?

At the prompt: Organization Name (eg, company) [Internet Widgits Pty Ltd]:

Why did it default to this name?

Why not? It is just as good example name as any other.

It is up to you to provide correct values when you create CSR request.

Your kidding right? Why would I want some other company name on my bought cert. Its a optional prompt and should not default to another company/organization.

That’s obvious, but you don’t offer a default value of someone else’s company/organization when you elect to not put in a value.

Hi
That is the default used by openssl, there is some expectation that the end user fills this in…

No. It has been this way since the very beginning (1998). Personally I like possibility to quickly generate test certificate by pressing ENTER several times.

If you think it has to be changed you should discuss it with OpenSSL developers. This forum is certainly the wrong place.

maybe im wrong but it looks obvious to me that “widgitz pty ltd” is not “someone elses company” but just a fake name to have something in that space.
