Rolled back to 7.16 today after many desktop freezes. Still having many problems but it mostly runs. How do I gather logs to figure out what the issue really is? System is non-NVidia and only runs integrated Intel GPU. When the system freezes on kernal 7.1.7 or 7.1.8 anything in the background is still running (such as audio playback). The crashes I am getting desktop notifications for appear to be:
xdg-desktop-portal-kde, plasmashell, kwin_x11 (closed unexpectedly).
Any help would be appreciated. The system refuses to be useful on 7.1.7 or 7.1.8 kernel updates from this last week as it will log in and run until I use something like Zoom or Chromium web browser (I’m suspecting issues there but cannot isolate it to them as it has happened, just a lot less frequently with any open program).
I am not using Plasma but since it will be important for anyone who is willing and able to help you: You seem to be running Plasma on X11. Do you get the crashes also in Wayland?
Honestly have not tried as of yet. My past experiences with Wayland has kept it on “the back burner” for me. I will switch and give it a try. Other than those three crashes I listed above, everything is running fine on the last updates I did last Friday (7 August) that had Kernel 7.1.6.
You should give Wayland a try. From version 6.8 (release scheduled for October this year) KDE Plasma will be Wayland only as it drops X11 support.

You can narrow it down to the time see what you get.

I had a similar problem with Slowroll. While working in a CLI only run level, I realized there was still a problem. I tried running the recovery boot option a few times, but it kept hanging on ‘journald.service’. It could neither fully start it nor sigkill it. I finally decided to try sudo zypper install --force systemd. So far, so good. But I cannot swear it was the latter step that killed the gremlins. The boot session I used to run the zypper was much cleaner than the previous ones.
I recommend getting a recent USB stick ISO for tumbleweed and trying a reinstallation if neither recovery mode nor reinstalling systemd solves things.
PS: I also did a sudo zypper install --force kernel-default then sudo dracut --force before the steps mentioned above. That fixed an even worse problem of not being able to boot with the latest kernel. I still had the gremlins locking up the system, but it may have contributed to the overall fix. It may help with your problem.

- Did you notice that, at around about the Kernel version 7.1.7, the SDDM support for X11 sessions was removed?
- Did you clean out the ‘~sddm/.cache/’ directory before rebooting to the new Kernel version?
Did you verify that? No:
This from a VM that never had a kernel before 7.1.7, now has 7.1.8 . Which kernels btw have zero relation to Plasma and either X11 or Wayland. What did happen was the switch to Plasma Wayland as the default. And a fact is that Plasma will not support X11 any longer from 6.8
Again, there is no, zero, 0, NULL relation between SDDM and kernel version.
This all is making things way more confusing.
So, after a little more wrangling with a few things I decided to bite the proverbial bullet and just press the selection for Wayland! So far it is working great. VirtualBox VM’s are still working. Will be trying OBS Studio, Zoom and GMeet hopefully soon (I don’t do online meetings very often (1x week for work and rarely for other purposes). However, there are no more strange crashes of the various parts of the KDE desktop platform. With that said, I hope everything works good as I have opportunity to test it all out. Hopefully no need to revert to X11 as I knew that’s been a bit of a security concern for a long time!
