Crash

Hi, i installed OpenSuse 12.1 64bits this monday 20.Feb with Gnome. Today when i was just opening a document in pdf and maximizing the window, the system crashed, stopped working, freezed, and nothing worked.
Some weeks ago i had Fedora installed with Gnome, and crashes also happened with different situations. I dont know if its Gnome problem, or my pc :frowning:

Iā€™m a newbie and i would appreciate some help to try to understand what is causing the crashes.
Does a log file with information exists?

Thank you for the help

Yes, but probably has nothing if the crash was fast. All logs ar under
/var/log/

You could start by checking memory; there is a checker in the installation
disk, boot screen.

A few people are reporting crashes when using the new 3.x kernel, so you
could try installing instead openSUSE 11.4

I did a memory check before the instalation, its was all ok.
I can try openSUSE 11.4 then.

Thank you

Wait for more comments, before taking that step.

-=WELCOME=- new poster, please tell us your experience level in openSUSE
and Linux (used other distros, or ??)

have you run YaST > Online Update since installing your system?

have you booted since running YaST > Online Update?

are you running Gnome2 or Gnome3?

when you tried to open the PDF document was that while in a browser?
(which, and what version?)ā€¦

or was the PDF on your hard drive? if it was, what application were you
attempting to open the PDF with? (Acrobat, or some otherā€“which?)

were you able to successfully open and display a PDF in full screen
before today?

tell us about your hardware (computer brand/model, CPU, amount of RAM
and video graphics set, etc)

hmmmmā€¦seems maybe it was a transient problemā€¦let us know if it
comes backā€“until then, have a lot of fun!!

[another way to say that: I have no idea what might have caused a one
time ā€˜freezeā€™ when opening a PDF! next time walk away and come back in
five minutes and see if it is still ā€˜frozenā€™ā€“sometimes things ā€˜fixā€™
themselvesā€¦]
