Crash when make update

I am using opensuse 13.2 64 bits

I clicked on the icon “update” and there was a problem
I turned off the computer and the opensuse not opened again.
I made a new installation.
Clicking again on the icon “update”, they were made some installations (few), but then the icon appeared again and this time stating that there were many files to update (some 300)
However, a problem has occurred again
When I click the icon, a window appears with the message “unknow hole type” and “Unknown state”
Now, I will reboot and I’m pretty sure that the system will not rise.
Someone can say something about this problem}

can say something about this problem

Not really

But ignore the update icon
Use the terminal and do

su -
zypper patch

Do that 2 times after a new install
Then reboot

I should ignore the update icon forever, and continue updating from the command line?
Or is it just this once?

Another problem: When I installed wine, the message “unknow hole type” and “Unknown state”" reappeared, but the wine was installed and is working, but I do not know if there are flaws that may appear on more extensive use.

What do you think about this?

I never use it. Some people prefer it. You choose. I choose YaST.

Another problem, another thread

But that was the initial question, It is not another problem.

I pointed out this error message and it keeps popping up with the installation of other applications.

In this way, I have to make a topic for each installed program. This is not right.

I think there is something wrong with the updates I get from repositories.

1-Because of an update, I had to reinstall the OpenSuse
2-I’m fresh installation and still have problamas with updates

I’m even afraid to upgrade my other computers. I think you too.

Well, in that case, as I said, update with YaST Online Update (aka YOU),
or with “zypper patch”.

I simply do not know how to update with that updater applet you use. I
removed it years ago and I don’t intend to try it again.

Nope.

I’m confused at which desktop since they use different notification programs??? :open_mouth:

I suppose you mean “Unknown role type”?
This is no error message.

The applet just displays PackageKit’s current status. But due to a bug, it always displays “Unknown role type” and “Unknown state” by mistake instead of the real status. Nothing to worry about, it’s just a wrong text that’s being displayed. Updates should be installed fine nevertheless.

This “problem” should be fixed by updates though. So make sure that you install all of them.
And you need to reboot (or at least logout and in again) to have the fixed version running.

As mentioned already, run “zypper patch” or YaST->Online Update if you feel unsure about the update applet.
And if you get an error message there, please post it.

Maybe a list of your repos would help as well:

zypper lr -d

No. The messag that I received is “unknow hole type” and “Unknown state”

Right now I’m using OpenSuse 13.1 on another machine.
As everyone knows, when there are updates, will show an icon in the taskbar (small ball. With a “Y” in the center)

I will not update through this icon, because this way I had problems on another machine. and I had to reinstall the openSUSE.

I then used “zipper patch” and worked well.
But the icon on the taskbar warning that there are still updates to do.
If I do again “zipper patch” I get the message “Nothing to do”

“zipper patch” updates differently?

On a brand new install,
I highly recommend running “update” instead of patch the first time.

zypper update

Then, after that if you are running special apps which are extremely sensitive to library or underlying app versions, then run “patch” else for 95%+ of the world you’d likely be better off running “update” always, from then on to not only get security fixes but also to get enhancements.

TSU

in this case, it is best to turn off the icon that appears on the taskbar, right?
How do I do this?

Yes, it does; the icon works similarly to “zypper up”.

Official updates are applied with “zypper patch” or “yast online update”
(aka YOU), nothing more is needed.

For non official updates, like anything from packman or any extra
repository you activated, you need “zypper up”. Or in YaST, right click
on the list, all in this list, update if newer.

No. It’s definitely “Unknown role type”. Or did you modify it yourself?

As mentioned, this is no error, just a wrong status message that should be fixed after you installed all updates.

Right now I’m using OpenSuse 13.1 on another machine.

I will not update through this icon, because this way I had problems on another machine. and I had to reinstall the openSUSE.

I never had a problem with installing updates via Apper. It should just work.

And “zypper up” does the same anyway. So if the update icon “destroys” your system, zypper probably will too.

If you do want to remove the update icon, right-click on the small up-arrow in the system tray (just left of the digital clock) and choose “System Tray Settings”. You can enable/disable it there.
Or uninstall the package “apper”.

No, it does not matter. You may use it as a reminder that there are
updates. Just ignore it.

Otherwise, depending on what desktop you can disable it, or remove
certain packages. I do the later.

However, in the case of gnome, the applet downloads the updates even
before you accept them. It does not install them till you accept; as
they are already downloaded, it goes faster. However, this is an issue
if you are on limited or metered Internet.
