Crash / Lockup when login 12.3 new install Geforce 6100 / nforce 405 MB

Just installed a fresh install of Opensuse 12.3 on an Emachines W5243, motherboard is Geforce 6100 / Nforce 405. 2GB ram, 500GB WD Blue HDD, AMD Athlon 64 3800+ CPU.

Install went ok, when logging into console the three icons come up, a HDD, Then Wrenches (settings?), then Globe (Network?) then 2 others try to come up and it locks up with nothing but green dashed lines across screen.

Not sure where to look, tried disabling onboard Audio, didn’t help, tried turning off apic mode, tried specifying frame buffer size, a few other things in BIOS, nothing helped, put BIOS settings back way it was originally problem hasn’t changed.

Assuming it could be a problem with X server. Tried KDE in failsafe, same problem.

Any suggestions? Troubleshooting process?

I am versed fair in Linux/Unix since 1991ish… But last Opensuse I used was 11.2. Help? Thanks.

Ok, I think I fixed it. During install it did install some generic “nvidia” driver I guess, but when I did rpm -qa | grep nvidia nothing… Followed advice from the Geforce 6600 thread and added the repository from LT and installed the proper Nvidia drivers and all other needed packages, restarted and now it’s loaded up with NVIDIA and working. Before it was using NOUVEO or however you spell that. I am using Firefox and posting this here from the machine now and all seems well. Thanks guys for providing the forum, it was very useful this time around!
