CPU running with top speed all the time

Ticket was closed because no one cared

Hi
Well the kernel developer asked for the users to test with the vanilla kernel, it appears they didn’t… so closed…

Use the vanilla kernel, re-open and post the info…

I just use what ever comes in the box. I don’t screw around with running special kernels.

I’m just posting here so that people in the future who Google for a solution and find this thread will see the history.

Just adding my 2 cents, since I witnessed the same problem on a Haswell CPU of mine.
Apparently the problem stems from the intel_pstate driver in kernel 4.4; things might have changed since kernel 4.5, personally I didn’t see this problem with kernels from 4.8.x to 4.11.x.
Apparently with this driver my CPU is happily going to idle (Cx states) without scaling down the frequency first; since I saw no other adverse effect from this behavior I stopped investigating.
The intel_pstate driver is the default for Sandy Bridge and later Intel processors, older chips should use the legacy acpi_cpufreq driver.
So if you see adverse effects, either install a later kernel or insert “intel_pstate=disable” in your boot command line.
If you need more accurate references, just search the web for “intel_pstate=disable”

HTH those finding this thread.

Hi,

I’ve just installed vanilla kernel and it RESOLVED THE PROBLEM.
I will inform on the site with bugs that this is a solution.

Regards.
