Radeon AMD HD 6770 - i5 Sandy Bridge Intel CPU - ASUS Motherboard
Had this issue before with 42.1 - fan speed high till i installed the right graphics driver from amd site.
now updating to the new 42.3, did a clean install, so needed to reinstall graphics driver - but the only compatible driver up to date that will work with 42.3 is the driver “amdgpu-pro” only .
.brings up blank screen at login with cpu running full speed.
during the fresh install i had to use 'no kms" as option to get into install gui
seems like the only thing left to do is reinstall 42.1 and redig up the old driver. or go buy a different graphics card,
whats a good graphics card to buy that i dont have to worry about it making my cpu fan go full speed?
According to the radeon man page, the HD 6770 is either a Juniper or Turks family member which, according to the Radeon Feature page of X.Org <https://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature/> is either “Evergreen” or “Northern Islands”, both of which are supported by the standard Radeon driver in the openSUSE Leap 42.3 kernel.

I’m writing this on a Laptop with AMD Aruba - Richland HD 8650G Dual Graphics which uses the default radeon driver included with openSUSE Leap 42.3.
i cant login…it stops booting at a black screen, I can see my cursor. then i can alt hit all my keys on my keyboard and a login screen shows…i can go to root into the command line…and then i ran ‘zypper up’ i can type ‘yast’ and i get the yast …tab around to get around…
no kde for me…and the dang cpu fan s full speed the whole time…
i went to the page you were taalking about but dont know how to download a driver …
if im at the command line in root…what do i type to install the right driver>?
can someone give me the exact code to type…cause i have to borrow my sons laptop when he comes over to read it and then type it inside my computer.
Hi
Well amdgpu-pro needs to be unitstalled, so at the black screen press ctrl+alt+F1 to get to a VT (Virtual Terminal) and here login as root user and cd to the directory where the amdgpu-pro install was done from, then run the install command again as this will uninstall the amdgpu-pro driver, repositories etc and restor the default radeon driver which is all you can use for this card.
all done…had to type yast and do it from inside of that…
it gets to the kde login gui now…but dang cpu is full throttle just waiting for me to login…
Im getting i have to go buy A NEW GRAPHICS CARD just to use opensuse now…
wow…thanks guys for the help…=)
I was able to uninstall the gpu pro , shows after i tried to uninstall using the zypper remove amd-gpu-pro /ended up with a “nothing to do” prompt.
I installed that rpm …enabled it…showed a success in status. and went on to login…CPU was still full speed.
I tried a couple of times to reboot…same result…
UEFI / BIOS “Power menu” – for example the rather old ASUS mainboard on this box:
ACPI 2.0 Support
– enable/disable; - ACPI APIC Support
– enable/disable; - CPU Q-Fan Function
: Mode: “Standard” or “Silent” or “Turbo” or “Manual”; CPU Fan Speed Low Limit: “beep if less than”.
I suspect that, if either of the “ACPI Support” functions is disabled then, none of the operating system fan speed control functions will have any effect on fan noise . . .
yea i have this asus p8p67
didnt see it in the bios setup…seen the settings to control speed…Mode: “Standard” or “Silent” or “Turbo” or “Manual”; CPU Fan Speed Low Limit: “beep if less than”
picked silent…restarted same results…fan at full speed …i duel boot with the same pc…so going into windows it quits down…just going into opensuse it stays full speed …
my son says just buy a new graphics card…I dont mind at this point…just sad cause its a decent card in there right now…im have it pushing out to 3 sceens in fact through windows.
only one sceen shows active. in opensuse…kde multimedia manager in settings…figured thats because the installing of the driver for this card would fix that…but even native driver aint making it work right,…thanks for the help again guys…looking at card on amazone today lol…
