I’ve just set up an opensuse 11 / XP dual boot on my machine and have most of it working well. I’ve tried to download the CPU drivers for my AMD athlon (an app. called cpufreq) but it seems to “install” it I have to go through rebuilding the kernel (and to be honest I don’t even know where to start with that!)
- Is rebuilding actually quite easy?
- More importantly, do I really need to install the CPU drivers or does it not matter?
Cheers,
Jon.
You don’t need a CPU driver to be able to run. Kernels handle the CPUs natively.
The cpufreq system is for tweaking frequency, voltage and other things for the purpose of power saving, or ramping up to full speed when needed. Most useful for portable computers.
Linux Kernel CPUfreq subsystem
I think you’ll find that there is already a cpufreq daemon and cpufrequtils supplied with SUSE. If it doesn’t find anything it can do with your CPU, then it’s probably too old or too new.
