CPU clock frequency

I run openSUSE 11.0 64 bits on an Intel Desktop Board DQ35J0 with an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3GHz. All is running perfectly, except the fact that the 2 CPU are running at a frequency of 2 GHz in place of 3 GHz, as given by KInfoCenter!!!
What is wrong? Any explanation would be greatly appreciated.

Your CPU frequency policy is set to dynamic. That’s why you see it running at 2 GHz. When your machine does not require processing power, it will jump to the lowest possible clock frequency. If you suddenly start something that requires (a lot) processing power, it will jump to its maximum.

in KDE, you can easily control the policy and frequency with kpowersave which is a small applet that lives in your taskbar.

Maybe they are throttling down to save energy (or battery life–you did not say
so we can only guess if you are on a laptop or not).

What have you set for your KPowersave settings? (You do know, don’t you, that
you can force it to run wide open all the time whether needed or not, and waste
all the electricity (or battery) you want.)

Or, what does KInfoCenter say the first 10 seconds after a boot (when both
Beagle and SUSE-Updater is running full out…

Or, you could load your machine down with something worthwhile like TWO
instances of http://folding.stanford.edu/ (one for each core) so that all unused
ticks are not turned into heat only.

Be kind to the earth (and your electricity bill)–save every tick you can.

Thanks a lot for your explanations
